TR2/3/3A My tr3 was stuck in reverse after a short drive

My tr3 was stuck in reverse after a short drive. The transmission is an OD, but I never used the OD on this drive. Not sure what to think, but I was stuck halfway in the road. I was close to the garage, and I put a floor jack under the car lifted the car up and started pounding on that section of the OD around the large fiber washer. I hit it a few times hard and then tried to move the shifter and the transmission went back to neutral.

Shortly after that I got thinking this should not be OD drive thing. My linkage must have jammed. I did replace the little anti rattle deal because the old one was missing and perhaps the anti-rattle deal jammed.

Am I correct in thinking this cannot be an OD problem? Heck I am not sure what to do. I cannot drive a car where reverse is not working correct. I am lucky it happened in front of the house. I appreciate any input.

I think you are correct...not an OD thing. I would bet the anti-rattle mechanism popped out and temporarily jammed the lever. Now that it's out it shouldn't happen again. The next most likely issue would be one of the balls, rods and springs in the cover shifter lock-out assembly.

Yeh I drove the car around some yesterday and everything seems fine. The ball and spring are probably out on the ground somewhere. I am not going to pull the lever just to look. There was some rattle, but my experience is the transmissions are nosey. The neighbors are probably praying for me because I basically lifted the car up with no jack stands and then started banging on the car with a hammer from underneath.

We are all praying for you…don’t do that! (Spare tires make good / readily available jackstands.). Be careful out there.
