My Shinny New Bullitt!

Ok so as many of you may or may not remember - I've been talking about getting a new Mustang for years (well actually ever since 2004/2005 when the latest generation first debuted). Well today I took the plunge and finally purchased a brand spanking new 08’ Bullitt Mustang!

All I can say is – I’ve always liked the look of the Bullitt but it wasn’t until I’d spent about 15 minutes behind the wheel of one that I was totally sold! In fact about halfway through the test drive I told the salesperson (a Bullitt owner herself) that we needed to head back and do the paperwork because I couldn’t see going home without one.

For those of you not familiar with the Bullitt Mustang it is a modern recreation of the original Highland Green 390 Mustang used by Steve McQueen in the Movie often acclaimed by many as the best car chase scene ever. Pitting our hero’s Mustang against a black Charger driven by the two bad guys.

Overall impression: I can’t believe how awesome this car it is. By comparison – I’ve driven many a common V6 Mustang rental car, as well as a few Mustang GTs. Likewise as some of you might remember I’ve also taken some time behind the wheel of a Shelby Mustang GT-H (H for Hertz) convertible. All that and I have to say that the Bullitt is by far the best handling Mustang I’ve ever driven. Certainly better than the aforementioned Mustangs and while I’d have to say that the Shelby GT-H seemed quicker (albeit not by much) – the Bullitt felt significantly more poised in the twisties thanks to some potent upgrades to the suspension. Granted the GT-H was a convertible and that might of been the difference as the Shelby GT coupe should be a better handling ride than the convertible version. Still while I won’t pretend it was cheap (although pricing did drop a little from when they first came out) after the first 24 hours of ownership I feel defiantly feel I got my money’s worth!

Yet another thing that impresses me was the 5-speed manual. Besides the retro aluminum ball shifter knob that is oh so retro cool – I totally loved the feel of the clutch and how positive the shifter felt & feel it is a vast improvement over the look & feel of the regular GT manual. Moreover the shifter position is ergonomically better positioned compared to the previous generation Mustangs.

Oh well I’m too excited to sleep and am looking forward to daylight when I can take her out for a “spirited” drive down one of the local roads.

I’ll try to post some pictures tomorrow.

Cheers,
Bret

sweet! I'd say drive it like you stole it but I don't think that will be a problem

Thanks John,

Yes it is hard to keep your right foot out of the engine.

Speaking of the engine here it is:

4.6L V8 putting out 315HP/325TQ!

Saturday one of my customers(his daily driver is a 71 bug) came by the shop with a new battery and a 5 gal. can for his other car we're working on...a 71 Mustang 428 CJ. Its a special model....syas its one of 500 or so with a bunch of factory mods. We fired it up and at idle your whole body vibrates. Step on it and thye neighbors came out to look.....awesome vehicle. Then my buddy Juan stopped by to look at it and I cornered hit about his 68 bullitt Mustang. Has had it over 20 years...and is finally considering letting it go. In storage and only gets fired up a couple times a year. I have a few cars he really wants so we're thinking of doing the deal.

Fantastic, Bret! That's my favorite of the current Mustang version -- less extra trim makes for a much cleaner look. Hope it treats you well for many years.

which just reminded me of a story from my youth. Guy half a block away had a SERIOUSLY modified 65 Mustang. You could hear it every time he fired it up. About a week before he got it on the road, the local police showed up to fetch him and the car - turns out most everything on the car was from Midnight Auto Parts - thanks for the memory. (and yeah - he deserved it

To the uninformed or even the novice to all things Ford, the Bullitt is the ultimate sleeper. At first glance it looks like your average mundane Base model Mustang with a V6. But to those in the know – there are several (albeit negligible) clues to what it is. But most folks are in-tune to know that they’re not dealing with your average Pony Car or even a run of the mill GT with the driving lights & spoiler delete.

Nope most folks usually don’t realize that they’ve bitten off more than they can chew until they hear the Bullitt’s throaty exhaust note.

Hint Hint?

Ok, well they are only available in two color options – so the biggest giveaway has to be the Highland Green paint that is exclusive to the Bullitt. Those in Black (the second color option) are a bit more stealthy & harder to detect until you get up close to one or hear it's exhaust at full throttle.

However it takes a trained eye to spot some of the other more unassuming differences. Firstly, Bullitts are devoid of the Pony as seen on the Base V6 models, nor does it have the BIG driving lights in the front grille either like lesser GT's have. But rather the Bullitt has a discreet satin aluminum strip accenting the front egg crate grille that is suppose to be represent the chrome grill trim on the original 68 Mustang GT in the movie.

Then there is absolutely no Blue Oval, Mustang Pony or GT emblems on the Bullitt. Likewise carrying the no nonsense theme to the rear of the vehicle, you’ll note that it has a bulls-eye Bullitt badge in place of the normal GT or Pony plate on the back side were you insert the key to open it the trunk lid. BTW this plate is the only place that you will fine the letters F-O-R-D on the vehicle just under the bold BULLITT lettering. Likewise speaking of the trunk lid you’ll note that there is a total absence of any sort of cheesy spoiler (wing delete). Then there’s the Argent Gray torque thrust wheels and the two 3.5 inch chrome exhaust tips sticking out the car’s back end that are larger than the standard GT’s.

But as you might have guessed – the real differences only compound once you look under the Bullitts outwardly stealthy exterior.

Thanks Bret, I know to stay back a bit, or to crank up the boost depending upon what I am driving.

 Wow, you get all the cool new cars.

Sorry to let you down Kenny, but the last "NEW" car I bought was way back in 1985.

A ’85 Dodge Aries K-Car.

Ok, well.... Not "new" in that sense then... but the MGB, the Shark, then the nice BMW, and now the new Bullitt. Your driveway certainly sounds like it looks cool anyway.

Mine really sounds like it looks halfway cool, but the MGB is out back on jackstands with the front crossmember off, The Alfa is rusting away nicely in the front yard, the sailboat has mold growing on it's bottom, The 4-wheeled ATV is 23 years old with, I think, the original tires on it, And the other boat is out back being unused because I don't have a truck to pull it anymore.

Oh, well. If it was 1985 again, I'd at least look a little rich - hehehehehehehehe.

Well Doc, Yes your long term memory is holding up pretty well. Glad to see the meds are working!

But I never said I didn't have new cars in the past only that I never bought one new. The 2000 Intrepid I owned a quite few years ago was one of a long LONG string of company rides provided by employers.

In fact I liked that Dodge so much that when they laid me off in Oct 01" (direct result of Sept 11th) I bought it.

But still I don't count any of my company cars over the years.

Hope this helps.

TTFN!
