Got a weird one here. Have an older, and by that maybe 15 to 20 years old Brooklands steering wheel on a 1948 MG TC. The plastic is literally
leaking as in leaking an oily type substance from the rim. This is not coming from the hub, but the actual plastic rim so think it is the plastic
is breaking down and "off gassing" an oily substance that if not wiped off, will leak right onto the driver's seat. Once wiped off will leak more over a
week or so period. Has anyone ever seen something like this and any cure other than a new wheel ?
Thanks,
Mike

Does the “leak” have an odor?
Have you found any evidence of rodents?

Hey Elliot,
Wish that were the case but is an oily liguid and does not smell. I think it is the plastic breaking down and leeching out the oil. It is stored in a large car storage building so been hot and humid in there plus has a cover on it so does get hot. But I have owned many LBC's over the past 50 years and never had this problem with a Brooklands wheel. I will try and get a picture of it and post.
Thanks
Mike

I am currently dealing with a piece of dashboard trim where everytime I clean it, the finish comes off - so certainly possible. Also those old wheels were made of nasty stuff. That said, I wonder if grease from the hub is wicking down somehow - you mention a hot location and I know that any time I have ever had the wheel off there is usually grease to be found. It also seems like there is more dripping than just a wheel disintigrating.

I actually took off the MG center cap and no oil in the wheel hub and would have to somehow travel down the spokes but has been stored in a hot car storage garage my local car club has in town so guess anything is possible. Plastic overall is in good shape, just a real head scratcher .
