Just thought I would add some information as a newbie to this site. Although new to this forum I am not new to to the world of British sports cars. My first was a 1960 TR3 which I purchased in 1966 for $400. Since I was in college at the time and could barely afford to pay for my vices I began to learn to repair the beast. Somewhere along the way the love - hate relationship turned to mature affection and over the years I owned six TR3's - most were parts cars to provide a ready source of parts which were not always available back then. In 1970 I even saw a souped up gold colored TR3 on the streets of Saigon! I still have a picture of that one. My true love is the big Healey. In fact I am so besotted with the car that my wife graciuosly allowed me to name our daughter after the car. She is now 23 an her name is Alaetia Healey Anne. She also recognizes that bestowing this name upon her was merely asign of deep affection. Anyway my first Healey I bought upon my return from Nam to the DC area. It required a lot of attention and while doing attending to that car I stumbled upon a beautiful 1961 MK II 3.8L Jaguar sedan. What a beauty! So I bought it for $300. Then I was sent to Bangkok, Thailand for two years which began my love affair with Mercedes but that is a story for another forum. While in Thailand I bought another from a fellow pilot for $700. The car was in the States and in need of restoration which I eventually accomplished upon my return. At that time I the two Healey's, the MK II, a '77 Vette, a Bricklin and a 280Z for my wife. Somehow I managed to acquire a 1959 XK150 DHC for $3000 just beforte I got orders to Europe. So I sold everything except the 150, the Vette and the Z. In Europe began the Prsche craze and the continuation of the Mercedes for safe reliable transportation. The 150 went into restoration and five years, $22,000, two countries and a law suit, I finally was back in the States with the Jag back in our possession. We won a judgement against the restoration shop "Stonehenge" just outside of Chicago but the car was a mess and we never collected but a few dollars.
We sold the Jag eventually and bought a 1971 Series III XKE which I enjoyed immensly. Sold it in DC before heading back to Germany for what turned out to be an 11 year tour.
While there I bought a 67 Healey through Hemmings and was assured it was in perfect conditon. The fighter pilot I bought it from for $17,000 lied as I found out when it arrived in Germany. Undaunted I did what I enjoy and simply took the car apart to a nut and bolt restoration. One of the best years of my life! It was beautiful and nearly perfect but not quite...so I sold it to a dealer in the Netherlands.
Next came another XK150 that I bought over the internet (never do that my friends. The seller said it needed only $5000 to make it a superb dream. I could see myself doing castle tours in Europe with one of European Jag clubs but alas it was not to be so as the car sits in a restoration shop in Cumming, Georgia. At $73,000 it is nearing a concourse retoration completion and it is for sale. Meanwhile back at the ranch (which is now in Atlanta, GA against all my best whishes for somewhere else to be - no offense meant but this ain't my kinda place- too much bloody traffic and so far no good Italian food!) Anyway this evil person inside me went looking for a Healey on the internet found a beauty for $26,500. It now sits in my garage where it brings me much joy. I need to replace the top (and I still need good directions on how to accomplish that) and give it some TLC and it will be an absolute beauty.
So folks that's my story and I am sticking to it until I sell the Jag and then I will be looking for more delightful wheels!
