...is the Gunson Colortune. I was out playing with the carbs this morning and decided to purchase a colortune to see where I actually was on the mixture. I learned two things: 1) I was running the motor much leaner than I thought, and 2) I was turning the mixture screws the wrong way...when I thought I was richening the mix, I was, in fact, leaning it out. I used the #1 and #3 cylinders to take my measurements. After getting the mixture right to "bunsen burner blue" at idle, I synched up the carbs. I also use a carb synch tool to help me balance the front and rear carbs. I know this is kind of like "cheating", but at least until balancing the carbs becomes second nature, I do like having these "crutches".

The end result was I got the 1275 running smoother than I ever had. I had to stand behind the car for a little bit just to listen to the much more pleasant exhaust note. On the test drive the motor ran through all speed ranges smooth as a baby's butt and it accelerated nicely. Now, we just need some warm weather to get out there consistently!

Awesome. I got a Gunson color tune for free in a box of extras that came with a 1275 motor I picked up. I'm itching to try it out when I get some time.

Just filled my first tank after using the ColorTune -- there's definitely a marked improvement in the car's gas mileage, which was almost always off from what longbridgehealey was getting. I think I may have filled short, but even taking that into account, I'm now up in the 26 to 28 mpg range, which are the more "typical" numbers that had been observed in this car before.
