My Modeling Thread

I've had a couple of folks ask why I pulled my modeling thread. It was because I had specifically asked up front to keep the topic generic, but the thread eventually took a turn into what some would consider a controversial topic. Thus, since it was my thread in the first place, I just decided to pull it, that's all.

I've been thinking about this today and, for the benefit of some of the newer folks, I ought to take this opportunity to expand/explain my policy of keeping controversial topics off the forum (or trying to). This is something that has been a bedrock policy, along with keeping things clean and in good taste and not engaging in personal attacks, since the forum started in 2000.

The difficulty (for me at least) is that sometimes it's really a judgment call as to what constitutes a "controversial topic." Things that I might consider controversial topics may not be seen as such by others, and that's understandable. Conversely, there have been instances where someone posted a topic that I thought was perfectly fine, but which someone else didn't. Not too long ago such a topic was posted that I saw nothing wrong with. I was looking at it with my own set of biases, of course. But when someone PMd me with their concerns about that thread, I had to concede that, even though I might have agreed with everything in the thread, I saw their point of view also and deleted that topic. I try to be fair in that regard, although I am human (I know, it's hard to believe) and as prone to bad calls as anyone.

I have a lot of very strong opinions on a number of topics myself, but I make a conscious effort not to use my forum to enlighten you all with my opinions on things like politics, religion, the economy, or similar hot-button topics. Those who have been here a while probably have a good idea where my ideology lies, but I really do try hard not to be too obvious about it or shove my beliefs down your throats (even though it would do you a tremendous amount of good. )

The reality is, very few posts or topics get deleted here, but in those rare occasions when one does get removed, please don't take it personally. I've toyed with the idea of relaxing the rules regarding debating controversial topics, but I kind of feel that for the most part, things have run pretty smoothly as is, so "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" seems to apply.

You're the Boss and it's your forum, so you get to make the rules. Our job is to follow them.

Like MasterCard, sometimes ownership can be priceless.

Hey Boss, leave this one open to long and it'll get controversial. :jester:

Does Rutabaga help reduce cholesterol?

Dunno.

   One of my all-time favorites  !!! Boy you found that clip fast, Mickey!!!

Bill Fields was amazing.
Had a poster of him holding a poker hand with: "Trust Everybody... but CUT the Cards!" on my living room ceiling for years.

:iagree: Certainly ONE of the all-time greats, if not THE! His routines can provide humorous quotes for just about every situation! Since this is a car forum, here is one of the BEST car chase scenes ever...I love the quote "The resale value of this car is gonna be nil after this trip!"

And talk about controversy! Fields was quite a lightning rod in his day, due to the sexual innuendo of some of his routines and dialogue!

Probably G-rated nowadays...

Gee... I had no idea that random number generators and their use in simulation models could be such a touchy issue...

But just to be realy controversial:
Multiplicative, congruential random -number generators with multiplier ± 2k1 ± 2k2 and modulus 2p - 1

I hope no one is too offended by these....

I'd like to think we could discuss some of the principles and practical aspects of model and model development, validation, etc. in a fair and neutral manner despite the potential "political" implications of the use of the model. But I'm a model builder and user so maybe I'd be more-or-less on my own there....

Pretty much, I'd guess.

Although I used GPSS when "Step 1" was to read in the simulator itself, which consisted of a tray of cards (~6000 cards of object code). Oh, and a little NASTRAN after that.

Different sort of modeling I suspect....
