TR6 My first TR6 dilemma...

I think that you will all find that you have to tweak these emergency backup units regardless of who made them.
My first emergecy release is made from fishing lure parts .
Yes I have both installed to date

Hey Paul,

No luck yet... but I haven't given up.

I was able to spend a little time on it late Sunday after the party, but no luck.

Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of a physical inventory at work, and putting in some late hours. So I haven't been able to get back to it yet.

A friend of a friend offered to let me bring it over to his gas station this weekend, and put it up on a lift to hopefully get a better angle at it. So unless I get to give it another shot one evening this week, that's where I will be on Saturday. ;-)

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Roger

BTW here's a few pic's from last time I had her out...

Roger-

good luck getting your hood open. That is a beautiful
car you have there. I am wondering if I take a photo
and measure, it might be possible for you to drill a
hole through your glove box firewall and hook onto
the latch release arm from the underside as shown in my
photo? A good point of common reference is the passenger
windshield wiper base.

Tomster- I have been concepting a different emergency
hood release since the Macy does not work on my particular
latch. I came up with a double 14 gauge steel wire pull
release, with access through the glove box. It works great
but seems stiff and rather overkill.

So I went in search of thin, stainless steel, plastic
coated cable. All I could find was 1/8" diameter. I was
on the cell with my fishing buddy when it hit me. I have
exactly what I need in my tackle box.

So I removed the double 14 gauge wires and installed a
a single strand marlin rig SS leader. Work just fine.
Great minds must think alike.

Not sure if this will help but here it is anyway.

Here you can see the Macy hood release rod from the passenger foot well. You can see the position in relation to the under-dash bracket mounting position. If you drill a 3/16 hole here you could push a rod up and reach the latch lever where the Macy release makes contact.

Note: Have someone push down on the hood when you attempt to move the latch lever to take the pressure off so it can move easier.

Good luck.

Ronnie, I'm gonna let that last number slide as a "low" typo.

The H-3 is a rather interesting highway. About 8 miles long steep elevation rise in both directions. But coming from the Pearl Harbor side heading towards Kaneohe the grade is more gradual but looooong. Most cars start the bottom climb at around the posted speed limit of 60, but when they get close to the tunnel are usually only travelling 45, unless they downshift and accelerate.

The walls of the canyon channel the airflow so it causes some interesting crosscurrents. I've seen moving vans switch lanes without turning their wheels. Then they slow down a lot.

LOL Paul... I get "her" out once and a while too.

In fact, I enlisted her help in trying to get through the firewall last night, now I have another dilemma...

Hey Dale,

I really appreciate the offer, but I'm still hoping to get it open with a broomstick. They were standard issue with a few girls I dated (along with black hats and capes), so I believe I still know how to use one. ;-)

Funny thing, I was actually thinking the other night that I might be able to take one of my fishing rods. Then using a rope and hook, fish it up through the wheel to try snaging the latch.

Even if it doesn't work, I'll have a good "one that got away" story.

Seriously, I want to give a big thanks to everyone here for trying to help me out. You guys are terrific, and I really appreciate everyone's effort. Hopefully I can return the favor somewhere down the road.

If all else fails, maybe I should try an acorn...

Thanks again everyone,

To help orient you. Here's a photo with

Thought you might like to see what a 74TR6 French Blue, looks like without front and rear rubber bumper overriders looks like.

First picture is the before I bought it.

Second picture is after I had my way with it. The fun of making it "yours".
Enjoy, Enjoy !!

Hey Everyone,

Sorry for the delayed response, things have been pretty hectic at home and office as of late.

The good news is that I did get my hood open yesterday.

The person that was going to let me use his lift on Saturday wasn't able to free it up this weekend, so I figured I would play around with it some more yesterday. One of the first things I tried ended up working.

I started thinking about what both Jeff and Paul had mentioned about the hood, or catch possibly being misaligned. When it dawned on me that one of the few things I noticed that didn't look original under my hood was the latch.

So I tried giving it "CPR" but no luck.

As a last resort before going back to the broom stick. I realized I might be able to take a shop rag (to protect the paint)with a screw driver and work it down into the gap to try and pry it open if indeed it was just stuck. Once I got the screwdriver in place to lever it up, presto the hood popped open.

It turns out the pin was misaligned, since on closer inspection I see where the pin was coming down on the latch.

I will have to order up a new cable though, since the one on my car appears to be the original and has been stretched beyond repair. I will be replacing it at the same time that I install the emergency release I ordered.

Thanks again to everyone for the help... you guys are the best.

BTW, sweet car Richards.

Mine is #146 Tahiti Blue... But I haven't been able to find much on this color, and I still need to try and find some touch up paint.

I was just recently told that it's now supposed to be the same as #146 Rover blue, but haven't been able to confirm as of yet.

Roger, it looks proper without the bumper blocks. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif
Nice looking 6.
Good luck with the latch fix.
