My commute home this evening

Well that was a hoot. Coming home from work I was in my usual canyon route when I came upon some traffic. No problem, it was right at the start of a residential area where I normally drive slowly anyway. Well, the lead car pulled off and the Porsche Carerra S ahead of me, who had been staring at me in the mirror, took off ahead. There was still a block or two of residential area left so I let him go.

When I didn't react to him, he slowed a bit and I caught up quickly. I figured I'd let him go again as we passed the last danger on the road, an equestrian school. But he slowed for it as well so when we passed it, the game was on.

He did everything he could to drop the 38-year-old M.G. but just couldn't do it. That Carerra was under full load but he just couldn't get away. He gave it one last try as we approached the summit and finally gave up.

As we exited the canyons and went our separate ways, he gave a peace sign with his head hung low. I think he was very humbled by the experience. It seems his black shades, slicked back hair and shiny black Porsche didn't make him a better driver.

The video and sound are really bad but I got it. The slow shutter makes it look slow but at times we were moving pretty well.

That video will put a big smile on all British Car lovers faces. The heck with a penny, I'd give a whole dollar for the Porsche driver's thoughts after that little encounter.

Think he had any idea he was being filmed at the same time. Talk about getting "Posterized". "Slaaammm Dunk", as Chick Hearn would have said.

Neat.

And what a great commute....it reminds me of a never ending Bridgehampton.

But you record your rides home? Even I don't do that.

As for British cars vs. German Corvairs, it <u>is</u> fun to play around with them.
Personally, I think they are spooky cars to drive. Even worse than Spitfires and GT6s /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif .
The new ones are supposed to be better but still pretty weird for my tastes.
By the way, my physician has a Carrera S. I'm pretty sure I could beat him in my mini-van.

At the PVGP this year I had fun with a 911. He'd murder me on the straights and then I'd slowly reel him in on the turns. The vid is below.
For the record, my car had popped a rear wheel cylinder at the beginning of this practice sessions and had no rear brakes. The pedal was almost to the floor and the rear tires were soaked with brake fluid. And of course, I only have about 70 HP. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/square.gif

Here's the Link (Not exactly pro-quality; crappy old VHS conversion with no sound):

Both of those videos were a Gas!!! Thank you, thank you!! Lets see those Porsches in the rear-view in the next vids!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Reading down thru the thread I'm thinkin': This sounds a bit tall... I wuz thinkin': "Cedric"?!? Soon as the YouTube header came up I wuz laughin'. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Wish we had roads like that in Florida. Would like to have been able to see the tach and speedo as you were driving.

I was thinking about the tach and the speedo as well, wish we could have seen what that baby was pulling through those turns.

Considering the fact that he had given himself such a lead over you initially, you were reeling him in nicely! No wonder he was so shamefaced afterwards..... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

I said it before and I shall say it again. Wonderful roads and that car of yours? I am drooling as bad as my Labrador in front of the treat box right now........

Thanks for that, it was a lot of fun. Enjoyed every second of that one!

Awesome vid. I wish I got to see his face at the end. Where is this camera mounted? Inside or out? Any pics of the mounting?

Super nice sounds on that vid.

Most folks, except for us just don't understand what the little cars will do on a tight circut. Always fun to teach the big money guys how it really is. heh.

hehehehe....one thing I noticed: he used his brakes in corners/curves, you used the trans...whatever he gained on a astraight, you overcame in a curnve...

Now, we all have to put cameras in our cars!

Not normally. I just happened to put the camera in the car yesterday to play around. Lucky timing!

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]Personally, I think they are spooky cars to drive.
I agree. I drove a '72 911 once and it scared the crap outta me in the turns. You have to learn to drive all over again to master those things.

But then it will just be empty road! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

ROFL! Cedric handles very well, but there's no way I could have pushed a Carrera S up that hill with 100 HP.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]Would like to have been able to see the tach and speedo as you were driving.
I agree, but I would need lighting in the car. The interior is black, so the contrast between inside and outside would only allow exposure for one, not both.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]Considering the fact that he had given himself such a lead over you initially, you were reeling him in nicely!
He did slow a bit when I didn't initially chase him, then again (and rightly so) for the equestrian center.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]Where is this camera mounted? Inside or out? Any pics of the mounting?
Inside, center of windshield. No pics, but it's a stick-on mount meant to hold a small LCD monitor on a desktop. Works like a charm but having to use 2-sided tape is inconvenient. I plan to get a suction mount eventually... and a real camera!

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]if ya goddah drive to and from work that road makes it painless
It certainly helps. Have of my work is near the coast so I can take these roads. The other half is in the city so I have to sit in traffic on the freeway. I won't bother recording that for you. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]one thing I noticed: he used his brakes in corners/curves, you used the trans...whatever he gained on a astraight, you overcame in a curnve...
Indeed. It was a case of slight over steer versus slight under steer. It seemed I was able to overcome my car's weakness more than he was able to overcome his. I could have pushed a lot harder, but I wouldn't have on a public road. I won't cross the limit between fun and stupidity. You gotta leave yourself room to recover should something happen.

So Steve,

I was scanning over the specs on your webpage for your MGC GTS and while I did see where you pointed out that RWHP is about 200hp - I can't see the any weight or Torque rattings?

Reason for asking is I linked you video to some of my P-car friends and while nobody's screeming foul - they'd like to know some more about the car.

So far no Carrera S owners have commented. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Awesome, I was dying to see that all day at work, the network guys have that blocked.

What I meant was point your camera at the rear-view so that you can just see him fade into the distance! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

I'm not sure what the torque is. The weight of the car is estimated at around 2,200-2,300 pounds.
Is that wet ro dry race weight? Just kidding. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Also I'm guessing that it's less, but what does a stock 69 MGC weigh?

I think the stock weight is 2,400 lbs if I recall correctly. The aluminum head shaves a ton of weight over the cast iron one. Also delete bumpers and related bracketry, rear seat assembly and replace some of the steel panels with fiberglass including rear valence. Replace steel front valance with aluminum and original grill with lightweight mesh version. It retains the factory aluminum bonnet. I suppose it could be down to 2,200 lbs.

The stock engine produced 145 HP at the flywheel and 170 lbs/ft of torque. This engine is putting out 200 HP at the wheels, so I'm figuring that even with the over-bore the torque is still in the high 200's. With no dyno data to go on, that's purely a guess. For all I know someone could have screwed up the numbers before I bought the car.

On a side note, this video was the #86 highest rated automobile video on You Tube today. I have no idea if that's good or what it means, but there ya go.

O'm guessin' you have 300 pounds less than "normal" there. With the added HP/torque it has to be a riot to drive in any case! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif
