My Bugeye is finally "cool"
I had to remove the radiator to fix a cracked tank and I decided to tackle a bunch of small issues that were becoming major nuisances. As I mentioned in another thread, I fixed a loose fitting steering rack with some cloth electrical tape as a buffer. Now there is no slop in the mounting brackets.
I also replaced my non-functional temp gauge with one that works (and shows actual numbers too!). My Bugeye had a temp gauge that just read C for cold, N for normal and H for hot. I never knew what temp I was running. With the crack in the tank it was constantly running hot. Interestingly enough, very little water escaped, but the crack was big enough where a vacuum could not form. For good measure I replaced all of the coolant hoses. Good thing too because the lower one was super gooey & soft and starting to bulge.
Then I discovered the source of my small oil leak.....a very tiny crack in the plastic capillary tube for the oil pressure gauge. Right at the oil pump. I fixed it and then changed the oil. I'm crossing my fingers, but so far she runs cool and doesn't leak anything!
I plan on driving it around all day tomorrow, but the true test will be on my road trip to California in a few weeks. We'll see how she holds up to a 3000 mile excursion.
