Mugging at NAMI

As some of you know, I teach a 12-week course for NAMI to families who have loved one's affected by brain disorders. The class is held at our local NAMI affiliate offices.

I just got word that there was a mugging last night (not when our class occurs) and a female consumer (person affected by mental illness) was attacked and beat to a pulp and her purse was stolen. There was a meeting going on inside at the time for the NAMIWalks (See my banner in the forum summary page) and a Yoga class was also being held in another part of the facility (that is where the lady was headed). The people in the meeting heard her scream but by the time they got outside, the mugger was long gone and she had to be transported by Ambulance.

At tonight's class (and from now on) I plan to stand at the doorway until all the class members are safely inside our class facility. I'm also going to make sure no women in my class has to go to or from their car without an escort.

So sad. Hope they catch the low life (before you do :hammer: )

According to the police crime map, our location is in a relatively low crime area and nothing like this has happened in the 10 years we've been there. It appears this was a random case of someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I hope the low life gets his in the end,

And no matter what the lists say, no city or suburb is totally safe anymore.

Sorry to hear that...
Our crime rate is quite high, number 2 by some sources..... but the police work hard, hope they get him soon..

IIRC, New Mexico's high crime rate is the result of rampant heroin addiction, which was quite surprising to me when I read it. You'd think California's rate would be much higher. But I also read that the DEA are on top of it! Hopefully it'll get sorted out soon.
