Muffler Replacement with SS pipe

I got Dolly out of hibernation yesterday /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif

When I bought her, she had a stainless exhaust system. The muffler got banged up, so I replaced it with a OEM muffler that I bought on Ebay. It fit fine...I only had to add an extension to reach the rear silencer pipe. I noticed a slight vibration rattle from the downpipe hitting the tub under deacceleration, but now it seems to happen more often.

I am thinking about replacing the muffler with a pipe and just running with the rear silencer...does anyone know where I can get just the pipe in stainless steel? The only thing I seem to be able to find online is a complete set.

Any and all comments and suggestions are appreciated!

Most muffler shops here fabricate exhaust and have stainless pipes in stock. My guess would be that in PA. this is the same. That would be the route I'd take.

Me too. There used to be a "Superior Muffler" franchise in most PA cities: part of the deal was a pipe bender and bending charts for most every vehicle. Had a friend with one of these shops, he'd bend up any shape I wanted, in any material. HTH!
 
The center box does very little except to quiet the overall loudness of the exhaust. Removing it will result in a small increase of exhaust noise in the cabin but unless you're picky it isn't much. I never run a center box and feel they are only good for scraping the paint off speed bumps.

Don't get too hung up on stainless steel exhaust. It is usually very thin walled and brittle. I recommend asking for aluminized steel pipe. This material is cheaper, much thicker (meaning quieter) and will not rust. It can also be welded to stainless. I replaced the center box from a stainless system on my GT with aluminized pipe and wouldn't go back.
 
I'll agree with the elimination of the center box. Many a rear hanger ripped out and rear valence bugger'd from those things grabbin' RR crossing irregularities, manhole covers, et al.

agreed! I had a muffler shop custom bend me up and exhaust from the manifold back, including a 'hi-flow' catalytic converter for my B, and no mid-muffler. No more worries about snagging the mid-muffler on odd protrusions in parking lots, roads, and drive ways. The only thing I regret is the muffler/resonator I went with: FlowMaster "Hush Power". It resonates at a certain frequency that causes the body tub to amplify it around 3-3.5K RPM. I'm certain the addition of some sound deadening material in strategic locations will take care of that though. Other than that one thing, I love the sound I'm getting from my car these days. Had a co-worker comment on my exhaust while back; he thought a Mustang Cobra was turning onto the office's street until he saw my car. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif
 
The welds from splicing it to the existing system started breaking and I ended up with more leaks and odd sounds than I knew what to do with when I finally had the exhaust completely redone. Plus, the entire exhuast was hanging as low as, if not lower, than the exhaust with a mid-muffler. So, I was forever dragging it on the office parking lot entrance and speed bumps, which in hind sight probably caused the leaks. When I had it redone, I had the shop use 2" aluminized pipes front to back.
