Having a bit of trouble getting my brain out of 2nd gear today. I am creating a spreadsheet, and I need it to multiply two columns, and put the answer in a third column. An example is column A X Column B = Answer in column C

I can't for the life of me remember the formula to put in there. The help is like normal, not much help.

If anyone knows the formula, could you please let me know?
 
columns or fields?

= a1 * a2 in the answer field if fields

if columns you need to sum them and then do the same with the sum fields
 
Isn't it?
=sum(a1*a2)
 
Click into the cell you want the final sum to be in.
Click the E button on the taskbar.
Click the first cell, press the * button, then click the second cell, and press enter...
 
anybody remember "HAL" - the add-on for Lotus 1-2-3 back in the mid 1980s? It let you type in what you wanted in "English" and would then do what you asked.

Like: "HAL - multiply columns A and B and put the results in C".

(and some version of HAL actually knew what to do when you said "Open the pod bay doors please")

I was hoping to get the entire columns to do it. I can do it by hand, but was hoping there was a formula to get the columns to multiply.
 
Type your formula in the cell at the top, then click and hold that cell and highlight all the cells beneath it. go to <edit> <fill down> or grabe the little square on the corner of the cell with the formula in it and drag the formula down into the cells you want to fill with that formula.
 
Just a bit of trivia. In the movie 2001 - ever wonder how HAL got his name? If you shift each letter in HAL one place to the right in the alphabet, you get IBM.

And HAL was designed in Urbana, IL...just 10 miles from me.

BTW..Just copy and paste your formula into the additional cells to continue yourwork.

I just use Excel too much! At least you didn't ask about nested conditional formatting situations! :smile:
