Mounting Shocks - 62 BT7

Finally managed to get rt front shock off. All but one of the welded nuts is off - no wonder I could never keep this one tight. Does anyone have experience with this ? What's the recommended way to get it back on ?

Hondo,

This seems to be a fairly common problem with Healeys. There is only one reliable & permanent repair. (Bad news)

The shock mounting plate needs to be removed (cut out) & either repaired or replaced. Replacement mounting plates are available from several vendors. They must be welded back on.

I am not sure where you can find a shop near by that can do this job. The new plate must be positioned correctly to maintain proper front end alignment.

The preventive in the future is to periodically check & tighten the mounting bolts on all four shocks. Don't over tighten & strip the mounts. Some people recommend to use Loctite on the mounting bolts.

Someone else may have a suggestion on a temporary fix.

Hondo,

I was able to drill and tap for a helicoil insert into the captive nut but it sounds like your captive nut is completely gone ... bummer. Besides replacing the shock mounting plate, it is possible to cut a flap on the side of the shock mounting plate and slip a steel bar that has been drilled and tapped with the right spacing and threads for two mounting bolts. You will need to knock out the other captive nut that shares that side. Temporarily mount the shock body with 4 bolts which will hold the new strip in the right alignment and then tack weld the strip in place. The flap can then be closed and welded.

G'luck!
John
