Motor mounts

A friend of mine has a 79B and wants to replace a motor mount. Is this a big job? Do you just undo the motor mounts and jack up the engine until you can pull them out? Where should one place the jack?

the passenger side one is not too difficult to replace, but in order to get to the driver's side one without losing your sanity, the steering rack has to come out first (fairly easy to do).

I'd recommend using a engine hoist (cherry picker, a-frame, etc) to lift the engine slightly after the mounts are loose.

That said, I replaced my passenger side mount by jacking the car up, and stacking 12 inch wide boards under the engine, then let the car down just enough to get the old mount out, and the new on in. Jacked the car back up, tightened the bolts and removed the wood. Be careful about denting the oilpan though... spread the load out. I had towels placed strategically to cushion the load a bit, but still dented the pan a bit.

Open ended wrench, 5/8", one flat at a time with a LOT of patience will find the driver's side mount free.

It is possible...I've done it a couple of times....but taking the rack out will make the process "more human".

Driver side is gonna present problems because of how the steering runs through the motor mount...its going to cause lots of frustration

As another option, you could lift the engine from above - release the hood from its stay & stand it straight up & attach a rope from the hood to the rear of the car to hold it there, use the valve cover studs (after you remove the valve cover) to attach chains to your engine hoist & jack her up!
