I have seen spacers mentioned as being required on at least the left motor mount on MGBs. Why is this needed? Was missing on my '74, ready to put motor back in and want it to be right.

My 72 has one on the right and two on the left! That's the way it was set up when I tore it down to restore, so that's the way it went back together. I'm assuming it's a fine alignment adjustment. I don't think it would matter much if they were missing. JMHO. PJ

What thickness are they?

I never noticed any problems from them not being there, just wondering why they were called for. Idiot PO only had one bolt per mount as it was!

Their not very thick. I'm not sure. Maybe an 1/8th of an inch. Might even be a little thinner. Wish I could help more. I haven't talked to anyone yet that could tell me what their general purpose is. My guess that they are probably for a slight alignment adjustment, is just that, a guess.

My '77 has two on each side and they are all the same size!

I seem to recall the angle at the tailshaft/driveshaft is what's affected. Thickness is 1/16"~3/32" from what I can "guestimate" on the port side of the '64 here. None on starboard. Don't have one out to measure exactly.
 
Trying to reason why BL would have put so much effort into the very fine alignment of the drive line in our cars, as to use shims on the front motor mounts, I came across this article on a hot rodding web page. Even though it's for hot rods, it could apply to anything. It seems to make sense why an engineer would go to all the trouble. I agree with Doc, that it's for tail shaft alignment. But I still feel that it's not as critical as it's original intention.
