TR4/4A Moss Replacement Sheetmetal - TR4 - any good?

hi, just did a thorough inspection last night of my "up on blocks" complete bodytub (the car/interior is completely gutted)

I removed both front fenders and inspected the sills from front to back. here's what I found:
bottom edge of both front fenders (at rear edge of wheel opening) are rusty (rust extends upward about 3-4" and lengthwise about 5")
the leading edge of the rockerpanel/sill (where the fender bolts on) is soft/rusted on the front surfaces. tops are solid, bottoms are soft also. the rust on both sides does not extend as far back as the weld-point on the sill-section directly under the front edge of the doors).

And in my testing I really jammed hard with a screwdriver to see what was bad/what was not..

anyway, I see that Moss lists lower sections of each fender edge and also sells the front sections of each sill - the exact parts I need.

now the QUESTION: are the MOSS replacement panels good? I hear horror stories all the time about these? Are TRF's any better (I live about 60 miles from TRF).

thks. w

Try to get Heritage parts, they are better. If you don't mind the drive you should save some on shipping. Original fenders are notably better and worth tracking down in my experience even if they need some work.

Is "Heritage" a specific company or a moniker applied to anyone stocking parts approved by the BMHT? Please let me know who stocks/sells Heritage parts?

alternatively, I certainly know of plenty of TR's around with fenders and sills to scavenge - but I cannot imagine any of these "parts" cars being solid in the exact same places where I encountered the rust I have. heck, my car was a californian from inservice date until the late 70's before being Zeibarted to death in the early 80's and then put in storage for most of the late 80's and 90's....and there was still some rust.

so, my guess is that I'm not gonna find any original fenders. maybe NOS - but I'm sure that's long gone.

I just got back from Hershey and didn't see any TR fenders there.

You have to ask, TRF will tell you if they are or not. They are usually black with a Heritage Motor sticker on them. Moss and TRF sales people are used to the question.

I have several front fenders and doors and inner panels etc if you get stuck...

Hi, as a matter of fact, there is a guy selling TR4-250 front lower repair sections on EBAY at the moment. He is based in Iowa and was given a supportive vote from Joe Alexander (TR Vintage racer). I purchased a pair for $50 each.

yep, those are exactly what I need. I wonder why the Moss items are so much more expensive (at $236.xx) each! - maybe because the Moss pieces are larger (more surface area) and also include some of the molded fender edge/lip?

I don't need that much sheet metal - literally, just the areas around the mounting bolt holes.
