Considering switch to electric fan, and was initially going to buy parts separately. This kit looks quite nice although a little more expensive https://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=98330. Anyone bought this kit? Impressions? My main concern with the electric fan is that I would like to stick with a generator. According to instruction sheet fan draws 8.5 amps. I would also rather keep positive earth, but could live with that change to install this kit. Nice if it would go on sale too, as it is not part of current Moss sale promo I just got by email :smile:

I'm currently running an 8.8 amp Hayden with the original 19 amp generator, and it is definitely a compromise. It only works at all because the fan doesn't run much. Lack of generator power was also a consideration for moving to LED headlights (which draw only about half as much current as the H4 Halogens I had before).

Looks like you can pick up the same Hayden I have at Amazon for $65 (free shipping), and an adjustable (but mechanical) controller that I am fairly certain will work with positive ground for about $35 (plus S&H) at Summit. Not as fancy or complete as the Moss kit (you'll still have to provide wires and a fuse or circuit breaker, plus an override switch if you want one) but only 1/3 the price and it will work with positive ground. And you don't have to cut any hoses or pipes. (The Moss kit requires that you cut the original return pipe.)

Adjustable not necessary IMO, if you can find a fixed switch that suits you. I looked for some time, even bought a couple, but they all came on higher than I liked. Even the switch that was supposed to be a replacement for a 190F OEM switch didn't actually come on until about 210F. Modern cars are designed to run hotter, and put off starting the fan for as long as possible (I assume to reduce fuel consumption). But I wanted one that came on well before 200F and it seemed to me that adjustable was the only way to get that. That was some time ago, though, so you might have better luck today.

I'm not certain about the radiator probe. I used one for awhile on a Stag and it seemed to work OK, but the fan I got didn't move enough air to use as a stand-alone with the V8 and I took it off once I got replacements for the original mechanical fan and viscous drive. But the theory seems sound. On the TR3 I "rolled my own" controller, mostly for fun (I like to dabble in electronics), and since there was a screw-in port already available (heater port in the water pump housing), I just used that.
 
Thanks Randall. Guess the adjustable might make sense in case the preset does not come on early enough. According to Summit site adjustable range is 160-210 degrees F for the 3647 controller, which would give a broad range for adjustment. The preset one is supposed to be 185 Degrees F on, 170 Degrees F off. The other alternative is stick with the reversed yellow TR6 fan that was working fine. Just have things apart right now as I was checking cam timing, and of course it is a good time to make changes if I want with the rad out and nose off. Cheers, Mike
 
I have a thermo switch 85c on 80c off, fitted into the bottom radiator tank, much neater and accurate IMHO....with a 14" thermo fan fixed to a support frame that I made from aluminium sheet as I did not want the fan or its attachments touching the radiator core.
Also alternator, harmonic balancer etc.
