Moss Engine Paint Application

I know there is another Moss Engine Paint topic, but I didn't want to hijack it, I have done a lot of things to a car but never painted a motor, do you prime it before applying the Moss Healey Green Engine Paint.

Any tips on cleaning parts,I am just planning on spraying and wiping with brake cleaner or equivalent solvent, as well as brushing out some of the crevices where grease lingers.

Is one spray can enough? he asks hopefully.

No need to primer and one can is just enough, but two may be better if you need to do the tranny as well. Use thin coats as this stuff runs. Be sure to degrease the surface as best as possible since it WILL NOT STICK to grease

Cheers

You don't need to primer the cast iron block but it is recommended to use a self-etch primer on the stamped steel parts to help with adhesion.

A tip a engine rebuilder gave me ... after degreasing the block with lacquer thinner or brake cleaner, you can take a propane torch and pass it over the cast iron surface. If there is any residual oils/solvents/etc. it will come bubbling to the surface and you can burn it off. Use cleaner one more time on any of those areas and you should be good. Of course you don't want to dwell too much heat near any seals or gaskets but a propane torch won't heat things up too quickly either. I tried the torch on my block but since it was boiled out, it was clean and had no effect.

Cheers,
John

Done, paint stuck great, I did not prep the motor for concours I just wanted to paint it, so there are some scrapes and such, but the paint covered well and stuck down very well also, I wiped it over and over again with brake cleaner, kept getting residue, but decided to just start and see how the paint would cover, easy enough to wipe off and start over.

Covered and stuck great, seems to be a high quality paint, plenty left to paint my motor mounts.

The paint is a really light color compared to what was on my motor before, but of course it may have darkened with oil saturation and age. I painted the pan separately, once I put the head on the motor is not real balanced on the motor stand, very top heavy.

Hope to put it back in Friday, more questions sure to follow.
