Moss EFI kit and O/D tranny up-date thus far...

Update on my Tranny & EFI upgrade,

Discovered a few stumbling blocks & interesting surprises thus far. Oh nothing too serious just a little more work than expected. Guess I've gone this far may as well take care of this stuff now while it's all apart. I mean why in the world would I want to take any short cuts at this point.

Anyway here’s the short list issues that weren't expected:
1) Engine & tranny mounts shot – on order.
2) U-joints not too bad but kind of loose – on order.
3) Diff's Thrust washers also bad (according to my friend) – on order.
4) Flywheel is in good shape but needs to be turned & cleaned up before putting it all back together. I decided against the aluminum flywheel for now.
5) Slave unit is old & worn out - but we're going to rebuild the one I got with the O/D unit. Only unknown is the master - but we'll know soon enough.

Other interesting stuff.
Discovered that my engine has been tweaked ever so slightly. Doing a compression check we read about ~170psi on each piston. I was happy but my partner seemed to think that was a weirdly high number. Looking at the head more closely it’s easy to see it’s been off and “decked” using a scope we where even more amazed to discover that it’s running “flat top” pistons (9.0:1 we think?) rather than the stock dished (8.5:1) pistons.

All the other stuff checked out fine but because of the higher compression ratio due to the decked head & flat pistons – I don’t think I’ll be needing my assembled Aluminum head that I got off of ebay for a song anytime soon. Likewise I’m also concerned about the set of roller rockers I picked up too. Because with the flat pistons & decked head I might run the risk of having the pistons & the valves make contact with one another. Whatever I do I think I’d have to pop the head to check clearances before I do the roller rockers.

One old timer hot rod way of increasing throttle response; well before aluminum flywheels became reliable. Take your flywheel off, to a machine shop and have them lathe the outer "fat" off. Should be able to knock 5-6 lbs, at least, off easily. Plus, should be able to get it done for under an hour of the shops labor rate.

What are you going to do with the aluminum head?

Re: Moss EFI kit and O/D tranny up-date thus far...

I thought about lightening my flywheel at one time and will talk to the guy who runs a shop across town if he’d be willing to do it and what his turn around is.

Some of the other things I’ve got sitting on my shelf are a complete set of aluminum pulleys. Those should help with some of the parasitic power loss.

Haven’t decided yet. Kind of waiting to see if I like the results of what I’ve got.

Regardless if I was going to use it – because it has a larger combustion chamber, I’d have to have it decked just to get the combustion ratio up the stock.

The specs are available for lightening a cast flywheel, straight from the factory tuneing book. Well for a Bugeye in any case.

More issues discovered and addressed.

We chose to replace the front & rear engine seals and the timing chain cover gasket because they where leaking. Upon removal of the cover we found that the timing chain & gears (sprokets) where in pretty sad shape. So we replaced them and the all is back on track.

But while my partner did that, we're going to try to put everything back together before and test the O/D tranny before we start installing the EFI kit.

Wow, you're really getting some work done. I thought it was pretty cool when I finally got my new vent grille installed with mesh underneath.

Update!

Good news & Bad news.

The good news is that the O/D Tranny is in and works great. But I ended up having my mechanic friend do almost all of the work for me because work obligations got in the way.

Bad news: Work & personal obligations have gotten in the way again this weekend & next week. So I'm just going to go ahead and let my mechanic friend finish off the EFI kit for me too. Only downside is he's charging me about $90 an hour.

But it’s probably money well spent as he'd done the upgrade a couple of times already. So it's probably for the best as I don’t have to worry about leaving my car gutted, while I try to figure out when I’m going to get to work on it again.

When I get her back I’m going to start planning on the next project (camshaft & valve train) while I enjoy the benefits of the EFI kit and the O/D tranny.
