Morris 948 Going into a 59 Frogeye Sprite

Hi, I have a 1959 Sprite, I bought it as a rolling chassis in Feb. 2005. It had no running gear other than the differintial. I have a 948cc Morris Minor Engine that I will be rebuilding this winter. My first question is will the original Morris oil filter (that hangs straight down) fit in the engine compartment? The Sprite 948cc engine has the oil filter mounted at an angle toward the rear and extended away from the engine block. My second question is, will the newer SU H2 Carburetors fit the original Sprite SU H1 carburetor manifold ? Lastly, will the SU H2 Carbs be too powerful for a un-altered, stock 948cc engine? Any information will be really appreciated.

Don -
Where are you in Ohio?
By the way, I am running HS2s on a 948 in a '59 Bugeye.
Don't know about the Morris engine in a Bugeye, but I am sure that someone on the forum will be able to answer your question.

Hi I'm from the Akron area. I thought the HS2's would work, but wanted some feed back from someone who's made the conversion. Actually, the Morris Minor 948cc engine is basicaly the same engine thats in the early Sprites. The carbs and exaust are different, but that I think I have handled. The oil filter is another problem...that I'm still working on. I hope I get some advise from the forum.

The Morris 948 was plucked from the shelves and stuck in the first Sprites.
The oil filter/block adaptor (or lack of one) may be a problem and if it is, I have about 6 angled adaptors in my spares crate and you can have it if you need it.
I believe the exhaust manifold is the same but you will need the Sprite pipe as it is different from the Morris.
Carbs will work just fine.

My Frog had a straight down filter, and it fitted fine.
I guess the reason for the angled filter was to give more clearance to the chassis leg, but it does fit with the Minor one.

I think I have that covered, I was able to locate a original Bugeye adapter that extends the filter out from the engine and rotates it back. I don't have the return pipe, but I've been told with a little (or a lot) of luck I can get the old one to fit. Worst case is I weld a piece into the old pipe and extend it or have a hydralic shop build a new one using the original ends. Thanks, Don
