Wedge More TR8 questions and pictures [more added]

Re: More TR8 questions and pictures

Yup, you need more photos. Looking and sounding good so far though.

Re: More TR8 questions and pictures

I'm not an expert (yet!), but I will tell you that the VIN says it's a true TR8 - California model, built in Canley, so that would verify that it's an '80 model. It's got the velour upholstery, which some like better than the plaid, and was phased into production.

Try to get some more pictures, and keep us posted on what you find out. The market is starting to get interesting on these things.

Re: More TR8 questions and pictures

FWIW, this guy's had this car a LONG time, at least 6 months. I keep meaning to drop by, but haven't somehow.... ISTR he was asking $8995; it's been $5995 for a couple months(?). I also wonder how hard it would be to pass smog...

Re: More TR8 questions and pictures

Still looks good to me, Tom. The door mirrors aren't original - at least compared to all I've seen. And the molding on the side is probably after-market. Other than that, I don't see anything out of the ordinary. Someone with sharper eyes than mine may notice something I missed.

Mickey

Oh, yeah - I think it was already mentioned, but be sure to check the rust below the master cylinders. If it's not rusted through, you're probably safe; if so, be very wary.

Re: More TR8 questions and pictures

Looks like a nice solid car from where I stand. I agree, the mirrors don't look original but I think they're actually better looking than the original. As for the side moldings, if they were stuck on with the same adhesive mine were, you'll either have to live with them or be looking at some paintwork after they're removed. The dent in the door looks like it could pop out but then, if it were that simple, why didn't a dealer do it? So you may be looking at some paintwork anyway.

Other than that, if it's a solid runner and there's no hidden warts, I'd say it looks like a pretty decent deal if the miles are under 60k. Good luck and keep us posted.

Re: More TR8 questions and pictures

I have seen lessor TR8's go for much more. Looks like a good car. The FI is sorta cool also, harder to find.

Harder to find in place, but roughly 75% of TR8's were fuel injected from the factory.

Re: More TR8 questions and pictures

At most there were 600 fuel injected cars. Figure 411 or so 1981's, 36 or so Canadian 1982's, and maybe 150 for the 1980 California spec cars. Only one of the 400 plus coupes was fuel injected. Every 1980 convetible, except the few sold in Cali, were carbed. I have never seen a number written down, but I would bet less than 20% were FI.

Re: More TR8 questions and pictures

That would be my guess also. (20%) I have only seen a couple of FI'S in person. On the other hand I have seen many carb cars. Performance options are beter with the carbs..... That is a great price for that car. Good luck!!!

Re: More TR8 questions and pictures

Looks like your TR8 is on ebay right now. Buy it now price is $4500.00.
Good Luck,
Dave

I believe they're two different cars...

Re: More TR8 questions and pictures

Sorry, I think you're right, didn't look that close and both have the dented driver's door. If it weren't for the missing trim I would have sworn......

My bad, had my figures backwards. What was rattling around in there was really that all '81's were supposed to be fuel injected. Forgot that they made fewer TR8's in 1981.

Re: More TR8 questions and pictures

I spoke with the salesman today (while he was at DMV) who said he was aware of my offer, just very busy. He said he would call whe he gets a chance. I also was lucky enough to have a forum member check out the car for me! Apparently the car is very solid (as descibed) but sounds very typical of a 26 year car that hasn't been restored. Lots of work to be done.
