Yup-yup... It's a real PITA to have to yank the engine again in a few months just for the sake of a few bucks now!

If you doing it all, do it all. Miss Agatha even has a new ring gear.

yeah, it's funny how you look at a rebuilt engine and the smallest wear becomes amplified. just couldn't leave it that way. you know the starter pinion has similar wear. that replacement is a little more involved! but i'm looking at it!

starters are $30...."oreillys"...
if u can afford the $40 for
the ring gear, u might as well
change it, otherwise, you could
probably get by with yours.........zimmmy

it's not so much the pinion as it is replacing it (i.e., getting it off the starter) i have a replacement pinion. i just don't have the tools to replace it.

Doc, I certainly agree with you on principle but you don't really think that ring gear is going to fail in a few months, do you?

If it makes Fred feel better to change it, then by all means he should. As I said above though, I'd run that ring gear and I bet it'd last a good long time -- on the order of several years.

Y'all have a great day!!

Tim

i would agree tim. i guess for me, the path i am going allows me the time and effort to fix things like this. no doubt it would last but fixing it now just gives me some peace of mind that it won't readily give me a problem soon after i'm on the road.

And that peice of mind is important, not only that but just knowing it is all the best that you can do. Somehow it makes them sound better even.

Very true. If ya wanna, go-on an yell at me, Tim! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Rhino hide, y'see.

Though I percieved it as some fairly substantial wear...
I s'pose it'd depend on how often the starter is used and how worn the starter pinion is, too. If it were a client's car it'd get replaced. If it were mine I *might* chance it but I don't think so. Too easy to replace now. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif
