General Tech More on SU HS6 Floats and Float Bowls

Although I fixed my floats on one of my cars, I decided to move onto another and check the float levels there. I am puzzled by what I found, but I suspect others here may have good advice.

My front carburetor float level seems perfect, but my rear carburetor float level appears considerably low, maybe 1/2 inch below the top of the jet.

In checking this, I noticed a few things: a) First, this car had been sitting for a number of weeks, and yet the underside of the rear float bowl was slimy with a thick reddish, oily substance that I assume is old spoiled gasoline; b) the line to the float bowl was a bit loose at the bowl, meaning the tube nut was quite loose by standards; c) after running the engine moments before checking the float bowls, this same rear carburetor with the low float level and underside leak of some sort was actually very cold, actually “refrigerated” compared to the front carburetor. I could cool milk on it.

My random guesses are that the float is low do to the loose underside tube nut, and the cold feel of the carburetor may mean it’s running very rich.

Any thoughts out there about what’s going on and how to remedy?
 
If you pull the pistons and housings off, look into the jet.You then tickle the fuel pump to fill the bowls.
The fuel levels MUST be 40/50 thousands or so below the top of the jet.This allows the venturi effect to
pull the gas into the airstream and mix it. Carbs do get quite cool, I have seen ice form on other cars(not SU"s)
Tr's are hotter blooded I guess.
