More on Crankshaft woodruff key

I'm following MTribe's lead and trying to remove the woodruff key on my crankshaft. It's not coming out easily. Does it have to come out for the timing gear to come off?

I just replaced my cam with a hotter one and fiddled with the timing gear exactly as you show it in the photo.
In the end I left it alone since it didn't need to come off for the cam change.
I think there's a "collar" that has to come off before the woodruff key can be removed since it's over the top of the key, but I'm not real certain.
I know I couldn't move that collar or the key.

You should be removing the sleeve first, then the slinger, the gear and then the key. The key is what keeps the other parts turning with the crank, rather than spinning.

If you have deep grooves on the sleeve, consider replacing it or you may possibly be facing a leaking crankshaft seal.

Thanks guys. Got it all apart tonight. The woodruff key is about 1.75" long. It doesn't come off until the timing gear is off the crank.
