More exhaust: hangers and head pipe

Swapped cars again today so I could do a bit of work on the B. Pulled off the old exhaust and hangers and bailing wire, but left the 2 - 1 head pipe on as it seems fine. I'm thinking it's stock?

Also, I'm thinking that the rearmost mount was ripped out at some point. How do I fix? Weld in a new plate and captive nuts? Could a good exhaust shop do this (I have no welder).

So do I buy stock bits from Moss or just have my local shop custom build a pipe and rear muffler? They did the system on the Tunebug, and did it well.

2 -> 1 pipe ends pretty much at the right of this picture (black part at right was where it slipped into the middle pipe)

Rear exhaust bracket on the rear valence. Needs to be fixed, but how?

If you don't care about originality, just use a universal exhaust mount. Whatever your local muffler shop has will be fine. I use an old school, one man shop who fits each system to the particular car.

I have seen several MGBs with local muffler shop systems. Hey Joe just hang that Pinto muffler on it type of repairs. I think its a hit or miss chance you will take going to a muffler shop unless they understand that you want a correct system. Now if you want a bit of a sporty sound and just want the rear muffler and no center one then supply the shop with the muffler and correct center hanger and have them connect the front down pipe and new rear muffler. The rear hanger is a bit more involved. Fitting a proper rear bracket to attach the original type hanger will involve removing the fuel tank (at least at my shop!) and welding and burning the paint under the bumper. A universal strap will work fine but there will probably be a extra bolt thru the trunk floor or rear valance. Quite acceptable on a driver quality street car. MGB fuel tanks rust from the top and there may be fumes that will make the welding of the rear bracket a bad day for someone. Just to make clear my tank removing statement. Bob

Thanks, guys. I had figured the tank would need to be dropped if I was going to try and weld up that bracket. This car is a driver, so for now a universal mount should work fine -- don't want the car off the road too long while this is sorted out, but do want it solid.

I'll pick up the proper bits from Moss and take them to my shop to be fitted. They did a clean job with the Tunebug.

Almost forgot, that 2-1 down pipe is the stock one. I would keep that in place and install a single rear silencer. Leave the front can out. Use a free-flowing exhaust, not a traditional muffler for best performance.

Thanks, Steve.
