An Indian chief was feeling very sick, so he summoned the medicine
man. After a brief examination, the medicine man took out a long, thin
strip of elk rawhide and gave it to the chief, telling him to bite off,
chew, and swallow one inch of the leather every day. After a month, the
medicine man returned to see how the chief was feeling. The chief
shrugged and said, "The thong is ended, but the malady lingers on."
 
In other words, He didn't kick the bucket, he just turned a little pale.

The most powerful Chief in all the lands learned his three daughters were with child. To honor his daughters and bring the powers of the animal spirits to his pending grandchildren, the Chief dispatched his best hunters to the 4 corners of the world to bring back hides worthy of his daughters and their children. 8 months later, the tribe learned that the hunters were returning. Upon return, each hunter presented his hide to the Chief.

The first hunter went before the Chief, "Sir, here is the hide of a creature called a Lion. It was fierce and fought valiantly." The Chief was pleased and gave the lion hide to his 3rd oldest pregnant daughter.

The second hunter presented his hide to the Chief. "Sir, this is the hide of a creature called a Zebra. It was fast and sleek and graceful." Again the Chief was pleased and gave the Zebra hide to his 2nd oldest pregnant daughter.

The last hunter presented his hide to the Chief. "Sir, this is the hide of a creature called a Hippopatamus. A strange and mysterious beast, it could live on land and in water. More powerful than any creature I have ever seen. It was a battle of legend to slay this beast." The Chief was very pleased and presented this hide to his eldest pregnant daughter.

The tribal elders gathered around the hides and examined them. After much discussion, they made an announcement.

"The animal spirits have truly blessed our tribe. All three daughters will bear us sons, the eldest daughter shall bear us two sons."

On the delivery day, the tribe waited anxiously. Then, the word went out - the 3rd daughter has had a son. The son was laid on the Lion hide for all to see.

Then word went out - the second daughter has had a son. He was laid on the Zebra hide for all to see.

Finally, word went out - the first daugher has had TWO sons, and they were laid on the hippo hide for all to see.

The Chief, beaming with fatherly pride and pride for his tribe proclaimed:

"Send word throughout the lands, it is as the Elders have forseen:

The sons of the squaw of the Hippopotamus equal the sons of the squaws of the other two hides!!"
