Model Year Change

When does say a 1969 MGB become a 1970 MGB ? Is it a calendar date thing or some other convient time to tool over? Some times I find info for a 1969 model thats is for my 1970 model, I notice the cutoff for manuals and such is 1969 but if I get 1970 info it does not pertain . Hasn't caused any major problems , just curious.
thanks
Bob J

I'd say a '70 model would have the split rear bumper as it's most defining characteristic.

Using the "VIN" numbers will give you a more accurate build date than using the model year. Look at 1974 for example where they changed horses in mid stream, I believe to meet U.S.A.s safety standards. PJ /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Dealers often titled MGs as to the date sold, not necessarily the model year as well....which is why there are a "few" 1981 MGBs out there.

Yep, VIN is almost only way to tell what a car is because of mid-year changes by BL, dealer registration issues, etc....however, if it has the side reflectors & 'chicklet' headrests, its a '69 regardless of how its registered...&, if it has split rear bumper & side marker lights, its a '70.

What's the VIN?

Oh, I don't like black from a maintance standpoint, but I like it.

I believe the change over date usually happened at the factory some time around September after the summer holiday, but as they didn't adhere to the American practice.... (which seems to be change the model year whenever you think you need a sales bump - anyone know what the earliest date on record is for being able to buy 'next' year's model?)

Its a '70....& there are '80 cars that have some items which were on the earliest cars....heck, Jaguars use the same side marker lights...

What was the original color before it was painted?

It might be possible that a P.O. could have put older parts onto the car. A lot of the parts are interchangeable between model years. At least, that's my understanding of things.

Then again, there's some amount of variance on the cars straight from the factory, but I've no idea how much of that variance applies to your car.

Either way, nice looking B you have there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
