Spitfire MKII cam in a MKII '65 Spit - pros and cons

"A guy down the street" sez putting in a MKIII cam in the 1147cc engine is a good thing to do -- a relatively cheap upgrade.

Is this really a worthwhile upgrade or is it just "doing something to tell the guys about."?

What's the upside vs the down?

...and while I've got your attention, do you vote for a 3:89 tranny or OD as an upgrade?

The Mk2 Spitfire and the early (non-emissions) Mk3 Spitfire camshaft are the same, so no gain there! As to a 3.89:1 diff v. overdrive, the diff will be much cheaper and easier to source, but it will yield only about a 6% reduction in engine speed for a given gear. A typical Spitfire gearbox with OD gives you a: two extra gears and about a 20% reduction in engine speed in the top two gears.

Thanks for the information -- always good to hear from knowledgeable folks.
