Spitfire MK2 Generator

1967 Mk 2, Negative Ground.

Almost ready to give it back to the owner when I saw the electrical lead attached to the rear of the generator (larger lead) getting hot enough to melt the plastic insulator covering the connector (wire end).
Pulled both wires from the generator and both the Brown/Green and Brown/Yellow had +12V to them (key OFF). I didn't measure the exact voltage but it lit the test lamp right up.
I haven't messed with a generator or an external voltage regulator since the mid 60's. I also don't have a diagram of the internals of the voltage regulator or generator.
Anyone know if it's correct to have +12V to both these wires with the key off.
They're just dangling in space right now. I'm afraid to plug them back in till I find what they're supposed to do.

TIA
Tom

No, it's definitely not right.

It sounds like the cutout relay in the regulator is stuck shut. That's the one on the right as you look at it from the side with the terminals. Did you replace the regulator? The ones available today are not adjusted right as they come from the factory.

Pulled the cover off the regulator and found that engine OFF and key OFF everything under the cover was hot to the battery!

New V/R on the way.

Since you have high current from the battery through the regulator and into the generator, it's no surprise that the regulator was toasty! Did you notice if the cutout relay was closed?
