So I got caught up in the R5 saga Basil started, went rattling thru some lens review videos yesterday. Kinda half-arse looking for a short range, medium F.L. zoom as a less obtrusive optic to the 17~55mm ∱2.8. Some YouTube yayhoo was touting the "wonderful" sharpness and size of a 24~85mm FX ∱3.5~4.5 G VR... waaay to much for a new one! Found an E-Bay ad for one and it was "Buy it now" at about 1/5th the price. And in Florida, less than 100 miles away (UPS Next Day!). Here at 2PM today. Hand-held Ethel shots, 65mm 60th @ ∱4.5 (ISO 800). Minimum focal distance of the lens is about 14".

First frame, cropped a bit and size reduction:

Nice! Is that 14” min focus range at full tele? (85mm)?

Seems to hold across the zoom range. I backed off the zoom a bit to get slightly more DoF. Not sure it meant much, tho. It was wide open @ ∱4.5 for the 65mm zoom setting.

Anyone take notice of my nefarious DX vs. FX optics scheme? :devilish:

A slow yet inexorable slide toward lenses to work on a full-frame body. No mirrorless aim, rather a brace of 'em to fill the 24x36mm format. May take some time, a 14-24mm ∱2.8 is still a goat choker in used condition prices. But all we have in zooms over 18mm F.L. are already "in the bag". Looking to a D850 eventually. And if it doesn't go to plan we still have some nice glass!

I'm assuming that Nikon is similar to Canon it that and lens made for Full Frame with work on a Crop sensor body, but a lens made for crop frame sensors will not work on the full frame body?

Some DX lenses will function fine on an FX body, any DX optic shorter than about 18mm will start to vignette a 24x36mm sensor (or so I'm given to understand). Can't control the ∱-stop with the 12~24 DX on a film body, so can't make a valid test without a full-frame DSLR.

Did find a chap on-line who shot some architectural images with one and the vignetting at 12mm was quite noticeable. Past 18mm not so much.
