Mini engine paint color and pics needed

Country flag
Offline
My brother-in-law is working on my Mini and needs engine paint. Who has color pics of a freshly painted engine I can send him so he can see what should be what? I am presuming I can order paint from MiniMania, is this correct? Are there any other sources?? What is the correct color and code?? Thanks for your help! I know SOMEONE here has the pictures I am seeking....

Peter

Peter,
You can see my car's engine at:

I think you can buy BMC green from Moss in a spray can. MM probably does sell something similar. However, that's not what I used. I bought the Austin-Healey green engine enamel from POR-15 (por15.com). Their product is a high-solids, thick enamel that can easily be brushed on blocks. It can be thinned with mineral spirits and airbrushed or sprayed on components that need a smooth finish. 1 pint will probably do 2 or more engines and gearboxes. I'm very pleased with the results.

Thanks Doug! I will look at Moss and POR.

After looking at both sites, I think I will order a couple of spray cans from Moss and the paint kit from POR.

Doug, do you have any pics of your engine before it went back in the car? I am looking for views from all sides.

I'll look and see what I've got. I believe I have some views before I tore it apart. Is there anything in particular you're looking for details of?

Doug, as always, I appreciate the help. Mainly want to confirm what is painted green. And then to know how the other components should look, colors, finish, etc.

Thanks again,
Peter

I'll dig through some pictures later this evening. However, it's easy to tell you what on the engine was painted green... everything. The factory masked off the cylinder head top surface, the manifold surface, and plugged the dizzy opening. Then they sprayed absolutely everything else A-H green. That includes the gearbox, the generator and brackets, the oil filter head, water pump... everything. Then the fit the other ancillaries like the manifolds and dizzy.

Frankly I don't like the look of a painted gearbox so when mine was stripped down I cleaned it and painted it with clear coat. The dizzy's were always bare aluminum, the manifolds... who knows what they looked like new. Air cleaners were satin black and so on. One of the best sources for this information isn't me... but the book by Parnell on the Cooper and -S. Things like the engine color was not unique to the Cooper and -S but applied to all the cars. Although... OZ and NZ cars did have their unique features and colors.

Peter, I looked through the pictures I have of my engine after removal and prior to rebuild. I don't believe there is anything there that will help you. As I mentioned earlier, everything that attaches to the engine was green. This excludes the distributor, the heater valve, the manifolds, and the starter solenoid. Every bit of the gearbox originally was painted green. It's worth mentioning that items like the water pump and the clutch throw out arm and slave cylinder were also green. The factory just waited until the whole thing was built up (excluding the parts I mentioned earlier) and sprayed the lot green. Doing it this way certainly would have saved them time and material as there was much less masking. The solenoid, distributor, heater valve, manifolds, fan, fan belt, etc. were apparently installed later after the paint dried.

Thanks Doug. I ordered paint from POR and Moss. I'll send this info on to Terry.

Peter, you never mentioned what you decided to do and if you contacted my friend Dean. Did you decide to rebuild your engine or source a new/used one?
