Mileage Report

After a long battle with the HIF 4 carbs on our '73 B, I finally got the beastie running and tuned/timed. As it turns out, I had needle and seat issues with both carbs, along with the float on the front carb not being set right.

This past weekend, I made a trip of about 140 miles one way and checked the mileage. Bearing in mind that I had replaced the speedometer with a non-OD model, and as best I can tell it's reading between 15 and 20% slow, I multiplied the miles between fill-ups (181) by the lower amount - 1.15 - for a total of 208 miles. It took 6.5 gallons, so that came to 32 MPG! That was all interstate travel, except for 6 or 8 miles, in overdrive.

Couple that with the new (rebuilt) front shocks, and this is one happy camper! The car ran great all the way there and back.

Next trip is over to the Smokies next month to enjoy the fall colors.

Very nice! I've not checked mine (speedo and odometer broken), but those sounds like good numbers. Sounds like your B is running well, purring along nicely.

It is indeed! Can't wait to get over to E. Tennessee next month.

Tail of the Dragon, anyone?

Foothills Parkway?

Wine and cheese on the Little River?

Aren't all B speedometers off?Mine reads anywhere from
5 to 15 mph slow.At least I have an excuse to use a GPS!
On the trip to Reno,I figured I was getting right around
28 mpg.Not too bad,after getting around 10-12.

All those ideas sound good to me. Bit of a commute, though...

Mickey, Enjoy the trip, but use caution on the dragon. I love driving it but, watch for trucks when entering a curve. Horror stories have been born by people who didn't.

Thanks, Paul. Yep, I've heard many of the horror stories. I've driven it a couple times, and it can be pretty scary when the trucks are on it. Between them and the "Speedracers", you really have to be on alert. I've found the bikers to be the safest and friendliest.

There are lots of other roads over there that aren't nearly as busy, and have a lot of appeal for driving. I plan to do more scouting, as we're going to be over there for a week.

If anyone wants to hook up, let me know!

Mickey, if you're ever up this way please let me know. We have a very active LBC car club here (Shenandoah Valley British Car Club) with many great members, events and cars.

Our annual show is help Sept. 30 - Oct. 2 in Waynesboro, just a few miles from Rockfish Gap and the Skyline Drive. It's our 30th anneversary show, over 200 cars expected.

Just a hop/skip/jump up the Blue Ridge Parkway from you!

Cheers!

Thanks, Mark - will do.
