Midget steering column

I have a 77 Midget. I was removing the rack and pinion to do some rust removal and after the rack and pinion was removed, I noticed the steering column had slid forward. I moved it to see what was up and was able to pull the shaft out of the column. I could put it back in aligning the flat area with the corresponding area inside the column, but it does not go fully inside now, it sticks out 5 to 6 inches now (1st pic below). Also, when I had the shaft out, I noticed two nylon looking remnants on the shaft (2nd pic). Did something break, also, how does one get the shaft all the way back in the column?
