I am looking at a 69 Midget and have noticed something that I am hoping for some feedback on. When moving the shifter there seems to be little to no resistance going through neutral to reverse. Is that typical? On other Triumphs and MGB's I've had in the past there was some resistance and a lockout on reverse at least. The shifter seems vague. Supposedly it has a new clutch in it so I was wondering if it could be linkage adjustment or replacement or if this is typical?
 
I would bet the reverse detent is not there. It is under the shift lever and works against the ball.
 
It is a pin with a spring as I remember. Well maybe not. Shucks I don't remember but it is spring loaded and you have to slap the shifter right and back.
 
Thanks for the info. I would guess this means the tranny and engine need to come out to fix? Looks like the offer price is going down!
 
If it's the reverse plunger, it can be fixed with a little oil by just removing the shifter and working it a few times with some liquid wrench squirted at the plunger. If the car has been sitting, it probably just rusted in place.
 
If you are buying it, yep price should go down.

If it is yours it can be fixed without pulling anything but the shifter. Nice clean couple hours job.
