Midget 1500 misfires...

Hi all,
hope you might be able to help...
My Midget 1500 has as of late been a moody Lady.
Had a bad misfire the other day, went through and cleaned/contact-sprayed distributor and leads from dist. and at spark plugs. No improvement.
Checked spark plugs and found them to be very black and sooty. Changed plugs and that cured the misfire...for about 30 minutes. Pulled the plugs, black again, cleaned with wirebrush and problem gone again for 20-30 minutes.
Now it misfires and even backfires even after cleaning the plugs.
Question; What might cause the plugs to go black/sooty in such a short time and on top of that, still misfire and backfire after cleaning the plugs? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif
Thanks in advance!

Carl, check and see what the quality of spark is at the plugs. A weak spark will cause the exact symptoms you describe. You still have the electronic ignition in this beast, don't you?
As far as that goes, I'm totally unfamiliar with that ignition, so will let folks who have more knowledge of it proceed further.

Carl and Steve.
I just went through this same thing a couple of weeks ago with a points distributor. Identical symptoms, fouled plugs and all. It turned out to be the low tension lead in the distributor. Big surprise, huh! Changed that, and everything is fine.

Jeff, Steve,
Thanks for good pointers!
Low tension lead...would be the central one?...or, if not, where?
I'll also have a look at the air filters on my twin SU carbs, see if all is well with the air flow.
Thanks again! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
