Miata or Volvo 240 Wagon?

Ideas on these vehicles? We need a 3rd vehicle
that's pretty bulletproof,& these two came to mind.
Any thoughts on these,& does anyone know of a nice
one for sale, for a reasonable price?A Volvo would have to
be an automatic, but would prefer a stick on a Miata. The Cortina's up for sale,& looking at my options.
Sorry,but I'm having a problem posting - seems to
add extra letters when I can finally get it to post.

Re: Miata or Volvo 240 Wagon?

I would go with the older Volvo sedan over the station wagon. I love the big, boxy, 1980s Volvo sedans, but the wagons just are not cool.

Price limit?

Re: Miata or Volvo 240 Wagon?

I gotta disagree TK, The old Volvo "Bread-vans" are funky cool. If I was gonna get an 80s Volvo brick, It'd have to be a wagon. They were banned in their class in racing because the wagon body did so well. Can't get any cooler than that.
'Course for an extra car in the fleet, just to be used as a people transport, a Miata would be loads of fun. I think I'd be leaning towards that if I already had a good utility vehicle.

Re: Miata or Volvo 240 Wagon?

I'm with Ben, a wagon for sure (of course I could be biased, I drive an Audi wagon)

Everyone has different takes on cool, and different American sub-cultures view different cars as cool or uncool. Show a Miata to Rednecks, and they'll just fixate on how you can out-drag it with a truck. To other people, it is a very cool and chic car.

I view big, black or dark colored sedans as the most "cool" cars. They work great when your 18 or 80. Black can turn a bland Lincoln into a menacing, intimidating monster. One of the best things I will say about a car is "you know the Mafia has arrived", like when I was looking at a black '07 XJ8 the last time I was waiting around the local Jaguar dealer (during my oil change). That car is just cool. Since I'm 20, I prefer to use the word "swag" over "cool", because I have different defintions of each. Big, black, chromed sedans with big engines have swag, and I think that is the best thing a car can have.

Re: Miata or Volvo 240 Wagon?

A Volvo would have to be a wagon.I still don't
know why they go so cheap.
Our Son can break a rock - he managed to break an
'88 Chevy Corsica,& a Saturn SC1,a car that would last me
forever.
Our Son,#2 kid,is living with us until the job situation
improves.He's riding his bicycle,unless it's raining.
Any help on which years/models would be best, would be appreciated.

Re: Miata or Volvo 240 Wagon?

What is the availability and pricing of repairs/spares for each of the cars?

The answer to your query, to me, would lie within.

Don't add to your current frustrations.

Re: Miata or Volvo 240 Wagon?

A Miata or a Volvo??? :hammer: The two aren't in the same universe as to what they were designed to do. . For me it would be a no-brainer...Miata all the way. Of course, I'm a bit prejudiced, as I have one. It's been very reliable, and very easy to get parts and work on. Parts are also very reasonably priced. And then there is the fun factor. Great car to drive.

if it is for your son, call your insurance agent, I suspect he is going to recommend a Volvo. Might be a good time to have your son pay part (at least) I have found that this greatly improves the change of the car not breaking.

Re: Miata or Volvo 240 Wagon?

If you want to haul lumber get the volvo- if you want to pick up girls get the miata.

Re: Miata or Volvo 240 Wagon?

You can pick up girls in a Volvo... I did it with a minivan!

Re: Miata or Volvo 240 Wagon?

And there's room for more than one in the "lunch-box"!
Well stated "tk" on your views of big'ol sedans. I was just offering my opinion as well. That's what I like here.
Personally I never was attracted to "mafia cars" but It's cool that you like 'em. If we all liked the same thing, car shows would be really boring.
These guys will be the first to tell you I got strange tastes in cars anyhow... I'd jump on a Reliant Robin or a 2CV if the opportunity was right. And I've always had a thing for Estates.
Doug, How 'bout teachin' the kid to work on a car and get one of your projects on the road at the same time?

Funny thing about that, when my son bought a VW GTi, and I had him under my insurance policy when he was still living at home, the insurance agent said it would be cheaper to have him listed as the primary driver of the Miata, and me as the the primary driver of the VW. Go figure...

And no, he didn't drive my Miata.

No, the south is just like everywhere else - people make stupid, childish comments just as often there

As for the rest...I've rarely had to worry much about room with my Miata but it happens. Getting a huge bundle of paper towels from Sam's Club means I have to go solo and put them in the front seat. Trips mean I use the luggage rack or I pack with soft-duffel bags I know fit in the trunk.

Insurance may not be that bad either. A Miata isn't exactly a muscle car, and there's no way you can load it with - and thereby risk the lives of 4+ passengers.

Around here they are considered "girly cars" much like the new Beetle and the Cabrio; more so the first generation than the others. You gotta remember, this is the land of big mud tires and "danglies" from the hitch ball. Miatas, Beetles and cabrios are classified as "cute" cars here and are often highly requested by teenage girls.

While I'm not a fan of the new Beetle, I do like the old Cabriolet's and second gen Miatas. I know where there is a second gen w/ a bad engine and a free 302....

Last thing I need is yet another project car I don't need.

How would you know, you live in Florida.

Easy big fella, folks around these here parts tend to take statements like that as fightin' werds.
