T-Series MGTD rear oil seal leak

I'm a relatively new '52 MGTD owner and have recently gotten the car back on the road. Much to my dismay, it appears that the rear seal is leaking badly (a drop every 5 sec). When I purchased the car and drove it home, I suspect the seal started leaking and has gotten progressively worse. Any ideas on what is necessary to remedy? Do you think it's just the lower rope seal? Can the lower rope seal be replaced with the engine/trans still in place. Thanks in advance. BillW

The only way to stop the oil from coming out is to install a modern lip seal and pray. One by itself won't stop the oil! Moss sells a kit which sometimes works, but not always. There are also other methods out there using parts from modern cars. I haven't done it myself.

From all I have read and heard, these cars leak. Keep cat litter on hand, always. It won't stop the drip but will keep your floors neater.

Mr. (Ms.?) Westerman - The rear oil seal in the XPAG engines used in the T series cars is a very lengthly subjects that has been cussed and discussed to great length over the years. There have been many and varied modifications suggested and sold to correct the situation which as Steve S. states have a rather spotty record of success. I have compiled a collections of the discussions and various methods of minimizing the problem (I still have the original set up in our TD and it doesn't leak an excessive amount, but does leak a couple of drops at the end of each driving session). You have to realize that the XPAG engine is not far up on the evolution scale from the old open valve engines and was considered a very dry engine in the days when it was first produced (somewhere in the mid to late 30s). By today's standards it is a very leaky engine - it has been said that an MG that doesn't leak oil is out of oil. If you would like to have copies of the information I have on the oil leaks and how to minimize them, send me a PM with your e-mail address and I'll forward the info to you. You might also want to get a copy of Neil Carin's booklet Living With The XPAG, the Morris 'X' Series Engine. It is available from BritBook at: https://www.britbooks.com/index.htm The number for the book is MG710. This is an extremely informative book to have regarding the engines in the T series cars and well worth the price.
Cheers,

This made me chuckle out loud. I am going to look for this book also. Might be a nice one for the library.
