MGB MGB Tire Size

What current tire sizes best approximate the original height of the OE MGB tires. I don't want to mess up my speedo readings any more than necessary. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

I have 185/70/R14s on my cars.

I have 165/70/R14s on my 72, as that was the size it came with originally. They are Vredestein tires from Holland. They have a great ride, good handling and look nice. And no spedo problems. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif PJ

eh... the space tire in my trunk says "165 R14" no side profile designation; a tire size no longer in mass production. My car had 185/70-14 tires on it when I bought it, but I've switched to 185/65-14 tires since. When I roll the spare up next to the tires in use the spare is maybe a half inch taller over all. My speedo seems to register speeds that are accurate enough. Indicated 80 on the freeway keeps up with traffic, 10 over any surface street limits has me passing everyone, 5 over surface street limits has me keeping with the flow (if not a touch faster than some). Just judging from my indicated speeds and my speed in relation to the traffic around me, I'd have to say that the size tire I'm using has my indicated speed well within reason.

i can just see you telling Smokey that you figure your speed that way. He'll be laughing so hard if you are lucky he will make a mistake writing the ticket.

I would fit the tires that suit your driving habits best, and worry about the speedometer later. You can have the speedo recalibrated easily to whatever tire you like, and it will most likely be more accurate than it is now.

Go here for a tire size calculator to figure out which tire is closest to what you want: https://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

And here is a list of currently available 185/70R14 tires, with speed ratings. Sorry, I don't have a list for 165 or 175 widths.

My B's have 185/70R14's as well...Nut i was curious...Anyone put anything wider on theirs? Did it rub?

I have 195/60R15 on my '65B with no rubbing. I do have Superflex bushings, 72-spoke wheels and lower profile sidewalls with the taller wheels. So there is less body sway and less tire flex than there would be on a more stock configuration with 195 tires.

Thanks, My tires are good right now...I am just thinking for the future...Anyone running 195's on rostlyes?

I did a +1 conversion on my 71.

195/60/15 on the 15" minilites.

She turns on a dime! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I saw someone running 195's on Rostyles on Memorial Day weekend. They didn't mention anything about tire rubbing. The front appeared to have plenty of clearance. The only area I'd worry about rubbing is prolly the rear.

I had rear tire rubbing on 185/70 R14's on the inner rear fenders when I first got my car. Replacing the suspension bushings with poly urethane, replacing the tires with 185/65R14's, and adding a 5/8" front anti-sway bar seems to have cured the rubbing. The rubbing I experienced at the rear was prolly more due to worn bushings and a lack of an anti-sway bar than anything else though.

I've run 205's under a rubber bumper car with no problems.

Stock suspension - Enkei wheels.
