MGB "Spare" key

The other day when Carla was leaving school in Bowling Green she thought she'd lost our only key to the MGB. Turns out it was in a different pocket...whewww.

Today I built her a "spare" key with a piece of wire and alligator clips. 30 seconds under the hood and you're on the road with no key. Ain't 42 year old cars great??!!

Ah, new cars. New spare key 3 bucks. Much cheaper than a new burnt out computer, at 1200 + bucks! + installation! :eeek:

A new spare key for our '08 MINI is a bit more than 3 bucks! They told us: "Never drop these key fobs. A replacement is several hundred dollars". Don't know if they were just trying to scare us into taking care of them, but...

Probably true. Newer BMW keys are about $250 when "coded" to your VIN at the dealer.

A friend of mine runs a car shop. A customer requested he install a good, used 996 engine in his Porsche to the replace the current, exploded one.

Apparently, the electronics part of the swap didn't work out and there was no way to get the thing to start.
The car had to go to a Porsche dealer to be reprogrammed for $1500 (only after they had proof that the engine wasn't stolen).

The customer paid it (and could easily afford it), but still, kind of crazy.

Benz is a similar situation. It's all just a bit too much AFAIC.
