Stupid question, how does one go about taking off the intake grille in front of the windshield?

It's held in place by "speed nuts" and they're a real bugger to remove: best tool I found is a "pick" with a 90-degree angle at the end, coax the tip under (between) the nut/clip and body (thru the openings in the grille) and "worry" the clips off one-by-one... a pound or two of patience is required, too. Once you have 'em off there are li'l "inserts" you can get (Moss-IIRC) so's not to have to do the same thing again: then it just pries off.

A small mirror on a stalk thru the openings and you will see the nasty li'l beasties.


EDIT: Six of 'em... one at each end and four in the middle. Hateful!
 
... you mean that thing is actually held on with nuts... o_O and here I was thinking it'd be a simple thing to add some mesh to it sometime down the road... Not so sure I'm looking forward to it now.

Good thread...I was wondering about this myself....I've been meaning to get some mesh on there. Right now I've got a couple of the MG magnets that cover the thing.....I didn't buy these magnets, they just came with a car.

BTW: Make sure you don't leave that vent opened to "let the air circulate" I did in the winter once and the console filled up with snow, not good.
 
I'm putting the mesh in mine. I took out the center console a couple of weeks back and found a bunch of "helicopters" behind the radio!
 
It's a worthy project. WHen I disassembled the heater box and got into the plenum I found things that had taken root and sprouted in the two inches of muck in there.

I put "Pet Screen" under mine: Fibreglass re-enforced screen material, black.
 
I've no written "instructions". The illustration in the Workshop Manual is all I've ever seen. Likely someone here will know of an article on the proceedure if one exists.
 
You can pull the fan & front cover with the heater box still in the firewall - you have to pull straight up at an angle to get the lip of the front heater box cover out of the firewall...pulling the front cover allows access to the heater core

If you're planning on removing the entire heater box, make sure you disconnect the air control cable from the control under the dash & pull it with the heater box.
 
RE: control cable... Do it Tony's way, not the Dr E: "stand on yer head, fight cable-end/tweezers/chopstick/pinch-bolts working thru the 2x4-inch heater vent" method... I FORGOT to attach the cable and put the box back in, all shiny-pretty... paid th' price in using up a perfectly good HOUR to snake it all together later.
 
Yep, leave that cable on the heater box when you remove it....when you go to reinstall the heater box, get some small vacuum line & slide over end of cable....feed vacuum line through hole in firewall &, when heater is in, pull cable through.

That had been mentioned... caused me to react by whacking me head inadvertently onna underside of th' footwell... NOT FUNNY.
 
You can put in a pre cut,pre drilled mesh screen available from Moss if you do what Doc said and use the little plastic inserts in the holes. They are not expensive. The grill just pushes in and holds very well. If need be, you can just pull the grill back out with no trouble. When I installed the plastic inserts I made a tool that pushed on the inside bottom along with the top flange at the same time. This kept me from distorting the insert while pushing it down into the hole. I ruined two before using the tool. It worked! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif PJ
 
I am waaay too cheap to pay "them guyz" for a bit of material I had lyin' about inna hovel. 'sides, the "catproof" screening material is basic black. Looks bespoke, IMO. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And the RTV trick is just fine.
