This is a continuation of this thread https://www.britishcarforum.com/ubbthread...p;page=0#152398 I started in the pub about getting a car insured for my son...I am posting here to ask GT owners if their car is insured as a sports car or not because it drasically affects insurance for young drivers.

Thanks

CSAA rates them as not a sports car. I'm older so the insurance on the B GT is $600 per year.

(Skip, sorry I edited your spelling. I'm getting as bad as Reid.)

I'll have to double check, but I don't think any of my MGs are insured as sports cars. My BGT is insured as a daily driver, not as a classic, but I think they list it the same way as a sedan.

Liability only, less than 3,000 miles a year, not a sportscar...but I'm almost 60!

Thats good news....Anyone know the requirments to be considered a sports car, or non-sports car.....I don't mind getting something nice(like the GT) but I wanna make sure it not gunna kill him with insurance.

hehehehehe....Nah, just with repairs!

Zack,
I will give my dad a call in the morning and see what he can find out. He is our insurance agent and is up in Stayner. You see, our lad is also 16 and will have his license when the GT is finnished and on the road, so much the same situation.
We should get together some day too.

Paul

But will the places like Haggerty insure a 16 year old? & mine is way low bcause of my age & driving history - plus, I only do liability to protect the other guy.

I've always done much the same as you Tony. If I bend it, I mend it.

Had the +2 insured as a two door coupe; "like a Pinto, then." is how the agent finally came to equate it. He'd no "listing" for an Elan +2, he asked me what engine, I told him it was a Ford based four-banger. Things are a bit different now, but not that much. Still under $1K/yr.

My insurance was laways chep, even when I was in my early twenties. I think my insurer goes by horsepower and size, so its never been characterized as a sports car or anything else, but its totally affordable.

I don't think classic insurance is available for young drivers(I think the min is 25 here??)
I found a website last night(insurancehotline.com) that had MGB GT listed as available for quotes, and for my son it came back as around 5,500 a year!(CDN) I think thats a little steep considering the car is not even worth that....I tried again with a roadster and it gave me 3,600...I am assuming this website is off a little on their quotes becasue of the age of the cars?? In my mind theres no way a roadster would be less than a coupe...
Klutz, What comany is your dad at?..We should get together sometime...I missed you at Britsh car day...Do you ever go to any of the cruise night around here?

$332.00 per year (PI/PD/uninsured motorist) as a daily driver with the Gecko for my '71 B-GT. I'm 52. Haven't wrecked a car since I was a kid!

Not that I advocate fraud or anything but it is perfectly legal for you to "assign" a car to your son as a daily driver and to pick out the one in your fleet that will result in the lowest premium increase and still allow him full access to all of your other vehicles. In my case I assign Elliott to my beater truck, a 93 GMC pick up. He actually drives one of the Subarus almost all the time and has it at school with him, but the rating basis is on the assignment. Also, if you assign him an alternative car like that you can add the B onto your policy as an "occasional" car with an estimated low yearly mileage. No one is going to check up on the actual mileage used but it should still be something reasonably low, like five or six thousand miles. My premium for this at North Carolina rates is $140 a year for the B. I also agree with Tony about the coverage issues. Anyone older than twenty five must have already had run-ins with adjusters and carriers so I probably don't need to say this but paying for full comp and collision on something like a B seems to me to be a waste of money unless it is a $15000 show car. If anything were to happen the carrier would fight me tooth and nail over the value of the car and the quality of the repairs, so I just carry high liability limits and figure that a crash is going to cost me less than what I would have paid in in premiums over a two year period. Insurance is such an awful racket! I just try to stay away from it as far as I can and still feel like I have some reasonable protection. Jack

That isn't Fraud Jack, that is the way they do it here. When I put the TR7 on the road every spring, my Daughter goes on as Principal driver since we have three cars and three drivers. The cost for her is $1700.00 year, but since it is only on the road 6 months it works out to about $850.00. It will be a LOT more for the boy though. I would imagine I will be selling the TR7 in the spring... To many cars... too much insurance.

I pay $50 per year for full coverage...but no one with less than 10 years driving experice can drive her...works for me!

Twig, *IF* he were to get in a accident it would push up my rates correct??If not then thats not a bad idea, the last time I talked with my insurance company they told me if I put him on the Caddy(at a $1000 increase) it would also take affect on my Jag insurance becasue it has the highest value and is "available" to him...I tried to explain to the lady that theres no way he was touching my Jag but to no avail....His school is only like 2 minutes from home so he wouldn't even be driving to school.

Unfortunatly, that is the way it works here Zack. The TR7 I have to put my Daughter on as principal driver, has never been driven by her.. Took her out a few times, can't master the 5 speed, but regardles... Three cars.. Three drivers. Put him on the least expensive vehicle as Principal and the others as occasional. I will PM you my Dad's # and address if you want to call him. He is a Broker. We have ING... Very reasonable.
