MGB-GT MGB GT near me, but I can't justify buying it

My buddy spotted a pre-1970 MGB GT about two miles away from me just sitting in front of a house. He knocked on the door and politely asked if the car was for sale, and the owner said "yes, I'd take offers."

Sounds like the owner would sell pretty cheap, so I went over to take a look. It's a BRG car on rostyle wheels. I just looked at the driver's side, which has a baseball-sized hole in the rocker in front of the rear wheel. The interior is there, but ratty. My friend said he checked the floors, and they were solid (surprising.)I didn't see any rust on the exterior of the hatch, but I didn't stop to inspect up close.

The owner claims the car runs absolutely great, and it is an overdrive car. So in other words, it's a good runner that looks bad.

I just can't justify another car right now, especially one that needs welding. It's so tempting though, because I wonder how low the owner would go...but my wife would kill me.

The GTs are so great. I love the tail-out handling, and they are so comfortable for tall guys like me.

Sam,
She can only do that once .

Just think of the fun and the challenges. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sam.. By the looks of your garage, you have done enough sweet talking over the years.
Took me over a month before I had the gumption, (politically correct?) to tell her I was buying my 74.5 GT. What sold it to her was when I emailed all the positives and encouragement I got from the members on this board to go after it. I did this two days before I had it delivered.

Now... How do I tell her it is going in next month for rockers, sills rails?????
That may be a slight bigger sell.

Sam,

It is pretty obvious to me that with all those ragtops, you should have a car with a real roof...surely, your wife would understand that! Tell her it is a great grocery getter too ;-)

I've been in this situation a few times myself. What I'll
do is make the guy a real low offer. If he accepts it, I figure I was meant to own the car. If not, nothing lost.
This is also the way I get into trouble..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Actually, I think you need to get rid of the ... is it a reliant on the right side of the garage... and replace it with the GT... re: wives: Just tell her How good she looks in it... or something like. you look 20 years younger in that car.... works every time!!!

Actually guys, to be honest and fair, my wife said "if it's a good car, buy it." So if it didn't look like it needed tons of work, she'd never question it. I have the world's most awesome wife, probably because her father had 30+ cars at one time when she was growing up (so my collection is tiny in comparison. Plus my father-in-law never asked my mother-in-law before buying anything, so the simple act of asking my wife is very appreciated.)

Maybe I should say: at what price does it make sense, given the lack of space, and the low values for a really nice B-GT? If I do something senseless, then my wife has a legitimate reason to kill me! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Sam, it sounds as though you need to go back and give the car a thourough evaluation, and base your decision on that rather than a cursory inspection.
Besides, you KNOW you want it!
As for garage space, well, C5's are a dime a dozen. It can sit outside in the weather.

Tell your wife you are saving an orphan from an uncertain future, and you know your niece, nephew or high school auto repair class are looking for a project with alot of challenging options(then start asking around!!)Randi PS- i just did the same thing.............. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

There is one near me I have looked at in a Park & Sell lot. It inly has a couple bubbles in the paint around the top seam on the right rear fender and all the black carpet inside is faded and falling apart.

How can you tell if it has OD?

This car is $4500 OBO in Fairbanks, AK.

It seems perfectly solid.

The body rubber is kind of rotten too. The car actually looks like it came out of a desert or something. The chrome bumpers are not rusty but they need rechroming pretty badly. I think the car is a 1971 or 1972.
