MGB MGB Flywheel lightening

Is there a way to drill holes in an MGB flywheel to lighten it? I've heard of it being milled to lighten but was curious if I could put one on the water jet and cut a number of strategic holes to get it lighter.
 
Not knowing zippidy from doo-dah about this, my intuition would be to use the water jet to take out material but NOT punch holes through the flywheel? Leave a "webbing" on the backside for strength and structure, etc. Again, I don't know zippidy from doo-dah so be nice if I'm completely wrong. :smile:
 
Only problem you might encounter Vince, is the flywheel balance. Personally, before I did anything to the flywheel, I'd talk to Hap Waldrop and get his advice. No one I know, knows more than him on balancing our little engines. PJ

Do the traditional cutting of meat from the engine side. Holes in the thing open up a real can-o-worms. From introducing stress risers to balance issues.

And the laser guided machine that drills those initial balance holes in flywheels, cost more than 3 TDs and a couple TFs! :jester: Or close to it.

This is what I was thinking on my first response. Glad to know I'm not as dumb as I look! LOL :smile:
