Earlier this week I replaced thrust washers in the Spridget racer.
Yesterday, I pulled the entire stock wiring harness out of the Spridget (weighed a ton!) and made up a simple harness with only the power-circuits I need for racing.
The old harness blew up at the ~N. H. Vintage Races~

Anyway, I finished the wiring and other stuff, so I figured I'd like to get to work on the ~New MGB~ (it's a '69).

I've run the B up and down the local street and most stuff seems OK (other than a weeping fuel pump...I've got a new one for it).
Since it only covered 2000 miles in the last 20 years, I know it needs tires, belts, hoses and that sort of stuff. I'd already changed the oil and filter on it.

I know this MGB engine hasn't been apart in 20+ years (I'm friends with the former owner) and I wondered how it looked inside.

So this afternoon, I jacked it up and dropped the oil pan.
The engine is pretty easy to noodle with. The front 4 bolts on the oil pan can only come off if the engine mounts are unbolted and the engine is jacked up a bit, but that's not too hard.

Things were mucky but decent inside.
I think the last guy who saw the inside of this engine was probably named "Bert" and lived in Abingdon.
Rod bearings look worn but not bad (better than the 25 hours-old bearings I just pulled from the race-Spridget). They are standard size. Crank looks good. I'll "mike" it later this week and then order standard bearings if all is good.
While I'm at it, I'm going to pull the head. I have access to a valve grinder, so I'll clean up the head and valves.
If bores and pistons look OK, I'll just run a dingleberry hone up and down and re-ring the pistons. That will depend on what I find.
I'm hoping I'll have it back together and running next week.

So far, this car seems easy to work on. It's *gigantic* compared to the Spridget. Overall, about the same as the Miata, I'd say.

The last time I was inside one of these "big block" BMC engines was when I put rings in my MGA (in 1968).
In those years, my back was better and my tools were worse. :jester:

I'll try to get some pictures as I do this.

Boy, do I agree with you....& forget everything you know about the 'A' Series engine whe you tackle that 'B' engine!

I think he already has. '68... :jester:

It's funny but I consider the Spridget motors to be "tiny".

I guess it's a half-full/half-empty thing. :devilgrin:
