John, I have a 72 with the original engine and it's supposed to have the original head on it. I have a 79 also with the original engine. The 72 head has a patent number on top and to the right of the thermostat housing. On the 79 that area is blank. The 72 has soft valve seats and the 79 has hard valve seats. I think this change was made around 74, but not sure. Both have air injector holes above the spark plugs. I think the heads are interchangeable as long as you use the rocker assembly for that head as I've been told that the oil galley hole in the rear perch mount is slightly off from the early head. I'm not sure if the compression ratio is the same for the early and late head. If you intend on doing a lot of daily driving, I would lean toward the late head with the hard valve seats or have an early head converted. PJ /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

My 1974 MGBGT (engine has never been removed) has a patent # 565394 on the front. Keep in mind the 72-74 MGB cylinder heads have larger intake valves than the earlier and later engines (1.625 compared to 1.563) The 'big-valve' head I have waiting for my 1973 MGB has 12H2923 and AFIH cast into it.

I think you will find the part number cast into the top of the head between a couple of the valve springs.
