MGB MGB brakes

Just bought a 65 MGB last month. Rear brakes weren’t working well so I got into see what the problem was. I could tell someone before me didn’t put them back together right (brake shoes put in the wrong way, upper and lower springs flipped around). The manual that I have shows a picture but it’s not clear how the hand/parking brake lever goes in. I think some one flipped the left and right sides.

Does anyone have a picture that you took of one that is put together the correct way? Or can describe to me which way the hand brake lever goes in (does the “L” part of it go on the top or the bottom of the attached cross bar) and how is the 1 inch long tail section of the lower spring suppose to be positioned? I think I have everything else figured out and put back the correct way.

Any help would be appreciated, so I can maintain sanity figuring this out.

Welcome to the best forum for MGs. I like yourself am a newbie. I am NOT a DIYer so I can't really help you with my own knowledge, but I do have the owner's workshop manual and these are the pics that I could come up with so you can see what it's supposed to look like.
Click on the two links which are from my Infiniti forum where we have unlimited bandwidth.

On this forum I've been able to upload only 1(one) pic. Every time I try to upload a new one it will not let me plus I ALWAYS have to resize because of bandwidth limitations.

Here they are:

I hope this helps you out. I know I am the 22nd guy to look at your post but maybe the guys that really know their stuff on this forum and can help you, have not seen it yet.
Good luck and welcome!

Welcome to the forum August. If I were you ,I'd go to your local auto supplier, one who sells auto related books and buy a Haynes manual for MGBs. It will have an exploded view of the rear and front brake assy. It's a good helper when you get backed into a corner. Bently has a good manual also. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif PJ

That's where the first two pics that I sent to August came from. Right you are!

Right on Dimitri! I have half a dozen books on MGBs and it seems like I always go back to the Haynes manual for info. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif PJ

You know, a waitor in one of the clubs that I used to play at gave it to me in 98.
I wish I was more mechanically inclined I'd sure make better use of it. Still though, it's great to use as a reference point.

Welcome to the BCF!

Thanks Dimitri for the scans. I'm going go find a Haynes manual for it, looks like they have some good info in it. I have a factory MG repair manual for it. But all it has in it is some sketch drawing of the brakes. The one page with the photo is what I needed. Now as soon as ups shows up with my parts from Moss, I can get it all back together and drive it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Good luck with the car August. Keep us posted on your progress. We love to hear about LBCs that have cheated, "The /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gifCrusher" PJ /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
