hello again...Does anyone have A/C in their MG's? In the recent purchase of several "B" parts, I found what appears to be a factory/dealer air conditioning unit. I'd like to see some photos of the unit in the car and hear comments on performance, love it/hate it, etc...thanks

Hey Medic,
I don't have any pics, but my B has air but the compressor is gone. I plan on getting it going when I'm finished restoring it. I have seen the compressor attached to the air pump bracket and the alternator moved out and up to make room.
Found a fresh B in a junkyard with air and snatched the whole set-up for $50 in case some of my parts don't work.
Anyone know what make and model number compressor to buy?

We got to be talking about an MGBT with air not a roadster, right?

Dealers installed AC in both GT's & roadstrers...but, it'll draw all your power & your car won't be able to get out of its own way!

That's a shame, you'd think it would be a nice addition to a GT. Tony: Would performance upgrades make up for the power loss? Along with the A/C, I 've got box after box full of new and used parts. I've got two hi-compression engines, weber side draft, stainless headers and exhausts and etc...enough to build a nice performance engine. I'd like to put it in my GT, which is my daily driver, then it would truly be an all season car. Summers in the Ohio Valley can be pretty bad.

I would think more power would mean you'd see less of a loss from the original...but, then, you'd just be putting the power in to offset the AC's draw.

Yup...A/C was Royston's responsibility or the selling dealer. A/C in any B is a real power drag. The Japanese "beef roll" swashplate compressors are less so, but never adapted one to a B.

Friend of mine adapted a Sanyo compressor into his GT - John Hubbard in Huntsville if you wanna ask him about it

Personally I prefer 260 A/C in a roadster - roll down both windows and go 60mph /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

heh... When I still had my truck I equated the A/C button to the "turbo" button on the old school PCs... in 3rd through 5th gears there was a very noticeable difference in power to the wheels when the button was used.... heh

I actually had a sticker that said Turbo on the a/c button of my old 60hp Honda CRX. Turning off the A/C would actually allow about 20-30 more mph in top speed.

Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' 'bout!

I had a/c in my 71BGT and it worked damned fine! Using a modern(Sanden) compressor and 135A you could hardly detect when the compressor kicked on at idle. Now the old set up I had on my 72BGT back in the 70 used a York comp and it was a DOG! Bet that comp ate 20hp!

GERRY!!!! YEAH!!
Good to see you over here - you said the magic words: "modern (Sanden) compressor"

A guy I knew in Tucson had a 1600 Pinto, automatic, with air. If you left a red light, you were lucky to clear the opposite crosswalk before it changed again.
What a slug.
Jeff

Hmm, makes a B' more intresting. Maybe when I finish this Bugeye.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Sanden unit. They don't draw much power and push a lot of cold air. I'd just like to know which model to buy.
Rick

Now that I think about it, I think Sanden is what John Hubbard put in his GT
