I have purcahsed a '59 MGA and noticed it has no vacuum advance tube attached to the top of the distributor. SHould there be one? I didnt see a place to attach the tube on the intake manifold! It is a 1600 cc engine if that makes a difference. I did notice that accelarating to over 3000 rpm it starts to splutter a bit. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Hello Chris,
does the distributor have the diaphragm device attached to it and there is just no connection?. The connection at the carburettor end is probably on one of the carburettors, which should be H4 S.U.'s.
It is very unlikely that the lack of vacuum advance will be the cause of the splutter you describe, as it is purely an economy device and is designed to advance the timing when cruising, i.e. part throttle so that the engine can be set to run with a weaker mixture.
