Hi!

Making good progress with the 1800 and five speed conversion on my MGA. I have got a 3.9 diff to go in.

How do I pull the half shafts out?

I only have a crap manual and its not clear at all.

Problem is the axles are pressed onto the bearings which are hard in the rear axle assembly....you almost have to have a puller to get them out.
 
Put the hub back on the axle (leave out the half shaft securing plate bolts) and tap it out with a hammer. Or get a slide hammer. Or a puller of some sort.

We talking about the banjo MGA axle here. Nothing is pressed into anything (unless he is using a late MGB rear end already) - the hub and bearing are retained on the end of the axle tube by a nut.

What he is asking is how to remove the axles from a banjo rear end.

Just remove the brake drum, and the little screw that holds the axle shaft to the rear hub. It is then loose, but will be sticking to the hub by the gasket and there isn't much to pry on. If it is wire wheel, spin the knock off on and just pull by hand. If steel wheel, there are a few surfaces you can get at to pry gently with a large screwdriver to break the hold of the gasket. Then the axles just slide right out.

Be aware that you can't just install the MGB banjo 3.9 unless you have a Mk 2 MGA - earlier cars had splines that vary from the fine spline used in the MGB and you'd need to have the spider gears swapped out fo your existing diff.

Hi guys, I spoke to the local MG guy, yep, they should be an easy pull out job.

I know I have to swap over the spider gears inside.

Thanks, quite right, drums off, screws out, slide out the half shafts.

Have just changed to a 3.9 diff in under 2 hours, including swapping over to the 10 spline spider gears from the centre of the MGA diff to match my half shafts in the car.

Just one more way in which the MGA is superior to 'that later' model.... :thumbsup:
