Mk-I had the non-recessed. The Mk-II had the recessed one.

And many years ago when I asked that same question....I found the guys with MGAs at the shows had issues getting the MK1 style grille, so bought a MK2 style and installed it on their MK1. So, be careful how you do a quick identification of which Mark the MGA your looking at actually is.
1500, 1600/1, 1600/2, front park/turn lamps, taillamps, just a couple of things from ten feet.
